Chapter 7 - The Auction of Shadows

The steel door snapped shut automatically, the heavy electronic bolt sliding home with an absolute, terrifying finality.
Inside the small chamber, Noah threw his shoulder against the metal frame, but it was like hitting a mountain. The red emergency light continued to spin, bathing his mother’s pale face in crimson hues.
"Noah," Eleanor whispered, reaching for his hand. "Listen to me."
Noah dropped to his knees beside her bed. "I can't get it open, Mom. It's locked from the outside."
"The ventilation duct," she said, pointing up toward a dusty square vent near the ceiling. "It leads to the main HVAC trunk above the library. A child can fit through it. You can fit through it."
"I'm not leaving you!" Noah insisted, his voice breaking.
"You have to," Eleanor said, her green eyes burning with an intense, unyielding strength that time in the dark had not managed to extinguish. "If they catch you here, they’ll put you in a room just like this. You need to reach the authorities. You need to find Lily."
"Vanessa said there’s a board coming tonight," Noah said, pulling out the small cassette recorder. "They’re selling your research data."
Eleanor’s face grew grave. "It isn't research data, Noah. It’s access codes. Aegis Biometrics didn't invent a medicine—they built a digital backdoor into every major medical infrastructure server in the country. The clinical trials on me were to test if neural impulses could be manipulated remotely to cover up financial transfers."
Noah’s mind whirled. His father hadn't just built a secret room; he had turned their home into the command node of a multi-billion-dollar corporate espionage ring.
Suddenly, the heavy steel door clicked open once more.
Standing in the doorway was not Vanessa, but Richard Sterling himself. He was accompanied by two heavily armed guards in unmarked black tactical uniforms.
"Fascinating," Richard said smoothly, stepping over the threshold and looking down at Noah. "I must admit, Noah, I underestimated your resourcefulness. Your mother’s persistence clearly inherited itself in your bloodline."
May you like
"You're a monster," Noah spat, standing in front of his mother’s bed like a shield.
"I am a businessman," Richard corrected coldly, gesturing to the guards. "Secure the boy. The buyers from Geneva have just arrived in the grand parlor. It’s time to conclude our presentation."
