Chapter 8 - The Grand Parlor

The grand parlor of the Sterling Mansion had been transformed into an elite, private conference hall.

Four men in tailored dark suits sat around the long mahogany table, drinking scotch from crystal glasses. Laptops equipped with encrypted communication arrays sat open before them. Vanessa stood near the fireplace, holding a leather tablet, while Dr. Arthur Thorne adjusted a projector screen mounted on the wall.

Noah was forced into a high-backed leather chair near the corner of the room, his hands zip-tied tightly behind his back. A guard stood directly behind him, a hand resting on his sidearm.

His mother had been wheeled into the room on a mobile transport chair, her frame limp, attached to a portable heart monitor that chimed softly every few seconds.

"Gentlemen," Richard began, stepping to the head of the table. "Thank you for making the journey on such short notice. As you know, Aegis Biometrics has reached the final phase of Project Echo."

One of the buyers, a European man with a thick accent, leaned forward. "We were told the subject showed complete neurological compliance, Mr. Sterling. Yet I see your son was able to penetrate your security grid. That does not inspire confidence in your surveillance protocols."

Vanessa stepped forward, her eyes darting toward Noah with a flash of irritation. "The boy was an anomaly. A minor domestic complication that has been resolved."

"Has it?"

A small, quiet voice spoke up from the rear entrance of the parlor.

Everyone turned.

Standing in the doorway, drenched from the rain and covered in mud, was eight-year-old Lily.

Her tiny hands were trembling, but she wasn't alone. Standing behind her were four uniformed officers from the State Police Major Crimes Unit, along with two federal agents holding drawn weapons.

"Hands where we can see them!" the lead federal agent shouted, his voice echoing through the vast parlor. "Federal search warrant! Don't move!"

Richard’s face finally cracked. His eyes went wide as he looked at Lily. "How..."

From behind the police officers stepped Gabe Vance—the estate security chief whom Richard had trusted for five years.

"Gabe?" Richard gasped, his voice barely a whisper.

Gabe pulled a brass badge from his coat pocket, displaying it clearly. "Special Agent Vance, FBI Financial Crimes Division. We’ve been monitoring Aegis for three years, Sterling. We just needed the physical evidence of subject holding."

Vanessa made a sudden, desperate dart toward the side exit, reaching into her purse for a small silver firearm. But Gabe was faster. He tackled her to the Persian rug, twisting the weapon from her grip and cuffing her wrists in a single fluid motion.

"Get down! All of you, on the floor!" the officers barked, surrounding the buyers at the table.

In the chaotic seconds that followed, the guard behind Noah turned to draw his weapon. Noah didn't hesitate. He drove his heel backward into the guard's shin, sending the man tumbling into a heavy floor lamp.

Noah rolled out of his chair, kicking his feet free, and scrambled across the floor to his mother’s side.

"Mom!" he yelled, using his teeth to rip the zip-tie off his wrists—a cheap plastic tie that gave way under his desperate pressure.

Eleanor reached out, her frail hand wrapping tightly around Noah’s fingers. "Noah... Lily..."

Lily ran across the room, throwing herself into her mother's lap, weeping hysterically. "I brought the police, Mommy! I brought the good men!"
