Chapter 6 - The Trap Collapses

Back in Charlotte, the sun was setting behind the high-end suburban neighborhood where my house stood.

Lila was sitting in the master bedroom, frantically packing three oversized leather suitcases with designer bags, diamond jewelry, and high-end dresses she had bought with my money. Her hands were shaking so hard she dropped her passport twice on the hardwood floor.

Downstairs, Bryce was pacing through the living room, screaming into his phone at his corporate attorney.

"I don't care what the retainer costs, Arthur!" Bryce roared, his face red and sweaty. "Get the freeze lifted! The Atlanta group is threatening to pull out by midnight! If that contract dies, Vance Capital is bankrupt!"

"I can't lift a judicial freeze based on a felony forgery investigation, Bryce!" his lawyer’s voice yelled back through the phone speaker. "Brenda Miller just gave a full confession to the DA! You need to leave the country or get a criminal defense lawyer right now!"

The line went dead.

Bryce stared at his phone, his chest heaving. "Dammit!" he screamed, smashing the glass tumbler against the stone fireplace, shattering it into a hundred pieces.

"Bryce!" Lila screamed from the top of the stairs, running down with two suitcases. "We have to go to the airport! I bought two one-way tickets to St. Thomas! My offshore account in San Nevis is still active—we can live on the three hundred thousand until this blows over!"

"Give me the laptop," Bryce demanded, lunging toward her purse. "I need to transfer those funds to my private account before the state seals the offshore wire routes!"

"No!" Lila yelled, pulling her purse back. "That’s my money! I took it from Ethan’s account!"

"It’s our money, you stupid bitch!" Bryce snarled, grabbing her shoulder and wrestling her toward the kitchen counter. "Without my shell company, you wouldn't have been able to hide a single dollar!"

They fought in the kitchen—the same kitchen where my mother had been forced onto her knees hours earlier. Lila slapped Bryce across the face, her diamond ring scratching his cheek, while Bryce shoved her back against the marble island, snatching her purse and pulling out the encrypted bank token.

Suddenly, red and blue lights illuminated the high, stained-glass windows of the front foyer.

The low, heavy rumble of three police cruisers idled in the driveway outside, followed by the sharp, authoritative knock of heavy boots on the front porch.

"Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department!" a voice boomed through a megaphone outside. "Bryce Vance and Lila Carter! Open the door immediately! We have warrants for your arrest!"

Lila froze, her face turning as white as her linen suit. "No... no, no, no!" she whimpered, backing away toward the rear sliding glass doors.

Bryce ignored her, scrambling toward the basement door, hoping to reach the rear garage through the subterranean utility corridor.

He yanked the basement door open and sprinted down the concrete stairs in the dark—only to run directly into the chest of a six-foot-four State Trooper standing at the bottom of the stairs with his flashlight and sidearm drawn.

"Going somewhere, Mr. Vance?" the trooper asked calmly.

Before Bryce could speak, he was thrown against the concrete wall, his arms twisted behind his back, and steel handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists.

Upstairs, Lila ran out the rear glass doors into the backyard, her expensive high heels sinking into the soft wet grass. She made it ten feet toward the side gate before two female officers stepped out from the shadows of the patio, cutting off her escape route.

"Lila Carter," the lead officer said, reading from a laminated card. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, criminal conspiracy, corporate fraud, and felony elder abuse."

"You don't understand!" Lila shrieked as the cold metal closed around her manicured wrists. "It was my brother! He made me do it! I love my husband! Ethan! Ethan, help me!"

Her screams echoed across the quiet, wealthy neighborhood as her neighbors stood on their porches, watching through their phones as the high-society socialite was loaded into the back of a marked police cruiser in handcuffs.
