Chapter 7 - The Interrogation

Forty-eight hours after the arrests, I sat behind a one-way mirror in the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s office in downtown Charlotte, accompanied by Marcus.

On the other side of the glass sat Lila.

She looked nothing like the polished woman who had stood in silk pajamas three days ago. Her hair was greasy and unwashed, her expensive linen suit was wrinkled and stained, and her makeup was smeared across her pale face. She sat at a steel table, her hands cuffed in her lap, weeping loudly while her court-appointed public defender sat beside her, looking thoroughly exhausted.

Assistant District Attorney Karen Vance (again, no relation, just a formidable prosecutor) leaned across the table.

"Mrs. Carter," ADA Vance said, her voice dropping into a cold, rhythmic tone. "Your brother Bryce has just signed a full proffer agreement. In exchange for avoiding a twenty-year federal prison sentence, he has detailed every financial transfer, every forged document, and every instance of physical and psychological abuse inflicted on Ruth Carter over the past six months."

Lila sobbed harder, shaking her head. "He’s lying! He took all the money! I didn't know anything about the forgery! I just wanted... I just wanted us to have a nice life!"

"A nice life?" ADA Vance opened a thick black binder on the table. "These are the medical reports from the forensic physician who examined Ruth Carter yesterday morning in Asheville."

ADA Vance turned the binder toward Lila, revealing high-resolution color photographs of my mother’s wrists, knees, and back.

"Severe joint inflammation caused by forced physical labor," ADA Vance read from the report. "Multiple contusions consistent with physical restraint. Chronic malnutrition—her body weight dropped from one hundred and twenty pounds to eighty-eight pounds in four months. And this..."

ADA Vance tapped a photograph showing a deep purple bruise along my mother’s upper arm.

"This handprint matches your ring layout, Mrs. Carter," ADA Vance said softly. "You grabbed a seventy-one-year-old woman suffering from severe arthritis and forced her to scrub floors while you recorded her on your phone to mock her."

Lila closed her eyes, her body shaking hysterically. "I didn't mean to hurt her! She was so annoying! She kept asking for Ethan! She kept crying for her husband!"

Behind the glass, I closed my eyes, my hand tightening into a fist until my knuckles turned white. Marcus laid a steady hand on my shoulder.

"Easy, Ethan," Marcus whispered. "She’s going away for a very long time."

ADA Vance closed the binder with a sharp thud. "The District Attorney’s office is offering you a plea deal, Mrs. Carter. You will execute an immediate, unconditional surrender of all assets held in the San Nevis offshore account, return the 2025 Porsche, waive all rights to alimony or marital property division in your divorce proceedings, and plead guilty to class C felony fraud and elder abuse."

"And... and if I don't?" Lila squeaked, looking up through swollen red eyes.

"If you don't," ADA Vance leaned in, her eyes cold as ice, "we go to trial on Monday. I will call Ethan Carter and Ruth Carter to the stand. I will show these photographs to a Mecklenburg County jury. And I will personally ask the judge for the maximum sentence of twenty-five years in the state penitentiary without parole."

Lila looked at her public defender. The lawyer leaned in, whispered two words in her ear, and slowly shook his head.

Lila dropped her head onto the cold steel table and sobbed.

"I’ll sign," she whimpered. "I’ll sign everything."
