Chapter 3 - Freezing the Paradise

At 6:00 a.m. the following morning, while the sun was barely rising over the autumn mist of Bloomington, Charles Montgomery sat at my mother's table with three phones lined up in front of him.
"Claire," Charles said, looking up from his legal documents. "Because St. Barts is an overseas collective territory of France, Ethan believes he is outside the jurisdiction of Indiana state courts. He thinks he is safe in paradise."
"Is he?" I asked, holding Lily while my mother prepared fresh oatmeal.
"Not even close," Charles smiled—a cold, predatory expression that explained why he was paid millions by Harold Bennett. "In 2018, France signed the International Reciprocal Financial Fraud Enforcement Treaty. Furthermore, the banking institute where Victoria Sterling deposited your $620,000 home proceeds is Banque National de Paris, where Bennett Industrial holds an eight-percent equity stake and sits on the advisory board."
Charles picked up the red phone.
For forty-five minutes, I listened in awe as Charles spoke in fluent French to high-ranking magistrates in Paris and federal prosecutor representatives in Washington D.C.
He didn't just ask for a civil hold. He presented the forensic evidence of forged medical documents, stolen identity records, and the hospital records proving I was undergoing emergency major surgery when my signature was allegedly notarized.
By 8:30 a.m., Charles laid four stamped court orders on the table.
Global Asset Freeze: An emergency international Mareva Injunction freezing every bank account, credit facility, and investment fund held under the names of Ethan Whitmore, Victoria Sterling, and Lumina Holdings LLC.
Property Seizure Order: An immediate judicial lien placed on the luxury villa in St. Barts, preventing them from selling, mortgaging, or occupying the estate.
Red Notice Authorization: A criminal extradition warrant issued by the Indiana State Police in coordination with Interpol for Grand Larceny, Identity Theft, and Forgery.
"They are currently sitting on a white sand beach in St. Barts," Charles said, checking his watch. "In roughly ten minutes, Ethan Whitmore will attempt to buy his morning cappuccino."
Three thousand miles away, in the sunny French Caribbean, the trap snapped shut.
Marcus Vance’s team had placed surveillance officers on the island. At 9:00 a.m. EST, Marcus played an audio feed over the speakerphone in my mother’s living room.
We listened to the real-time recording.
Audio Recording - St. Barts Beach Cafe: "I'm sorry, sir. Your card has been declined." "Declined? That's impossible, try it again. It's an unlimited Black Card!" "Sir, the transaction code says 'Account Frozen by Judicial Order'. Both cards are flagged." "What?! Victoria, check your banking app on your phone!" "Ethan... my app says my balance is zero. All my accounts are locked! What did you do?!"
Hearing Ethan’s voice transform from arrogant confidence into sheer, stammering panic sent a surge of fierce, righteous strength through my veins.
"They can't access a single dollar, Claire," Charles announced cleanly. "They can't pay their hotel bill, they can't rent a car, and they can't buy a plane ticket."
"What happens now?" I asked.

Harold walked into the room, wearing a tailored navy suit provided by his team, looking every inch the titan he was.
"Now, Claire," Harold said, "we bring them back to Indiana. Not in first class, but in handcuffs."
