Chapter 5 - The St. Barts Extradition

Four days later, the Caribbean sun offered no warmth to Ethan Whitmore and Victoria Sterling.

Stranded in St. Barts without money, kicked out of their luxury resort for non-payment, and forced to sleep in a rented compact car, their romantic getaway had devolved into a nightmare of mutual hatred and resentment.

Through Marcus Vance’s live surveillance feed, we watched the dramatic moment French National Police and US Federal Marshals closed in on them at the Gustaf III Airport.

Ethan and Victoria were trying to board an island hopper ferry using Victoria’s remaining jewelry as payment.

"Ethan Whitmore! Victoria Sterling!" a French police commander called out over a megaphone, surrounded by six armed officers. "Raise your hands and step away from the dock!"

Victoria panicked instantly, screaming at Ethan. "This is your fault! You said your wife was stupid! You said she would never find out! You ruined my life!"

"Shut up, Victoria!" Ethan yelled back, his clothes wrinkled, his hair greasy and unwashed. "You’re the one who told me to sell the house while she was in surgery!"

Federal Marshals grabbed Ethan, forcing him down onto his knees against the concrete pier and clicking heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

Victoria was seized seconds later, weeping uncontrollably as her designer purse was confiscated and tagged as evidence.

Twenty-four hours later, a private transport plane chartered by federal authorities landed at Indianapolis International Airport.

I sat inside a private lounge at the terminal alongside Harold, Charles, and baby Lily, watching through a security glass window as Ethan and Victoria were led off the plane in orange prison jumpsuits and waist chains.

Ethan looked broken. The charming, polished architect who had spent twelve years lying to my face was gone. He was disheveled, shivering, and terrified.

As the officers marched him through the secure corridor, Ethan caught sight of me standing behind the glass window.

He stopped dead in his tracks.

"Claire!" Ethan screamed, his voice muffled by the glass wall. "Claire! Please! Tell them it’s a mistake! Talk to me!"

The officers held him back, but Harold signaled to the lead Marshal to allow a brief conversation through the intercom phone.

I picked up the heavy plastic receiver mounted on the wall. Ethan scrambled to grab his side of the phone with his cuffed hands.

"Claire!" Ethan wept into the receiver, pressing his face against the glass. "Baby, please! You have to drop the charges! Victoria manipulated me! She forced me to do it! I love you! I love Lily!"

I listened to his pathetic excuses without a single flicker of emotion on my face.

"Ethan," I said, my voice completely calm, cold, and detached. "You didn't just break my heart. You left your five-day-old daughter without a home, without clothes, and without a dime while I was recovering from major surgery. You sold our memories for cash."

"I'll give it all back!" Ethan sobbed. "I'll sign everything over to you! Just don't send me to prison! Please, Claire! I'm your husband!"

"You were my husband, Ethan," I corrected him softly. "Now, you are just a criminal paying his bill."

I slowly hung up the phone.

Ethan screamed my name, pounding his cuffed fists against the reinforced glass as the Marshals dragged him down the hallway toward the holding facility.

I turned my back on him and walked away, holding my daughter close.
