Chapter 6 - The Anatomy of a Heart

The day before the surgery was a quiet, agonizing wait.

The hospital room had become a small, self-contained universe where the passage of time was marked only by the drip of Leo’s IV and the changing light over the Puget Sound.

Julian spent the afternoon on the floor of the room, building a massive Lego space station with Ethan. The boy was incredibly sharp, his small fingers sorting the tiny plastic pieces with a precision that made Julian smile.

"You're very good at this, Ethan," Julian said, handing him a blue connector piece.

"Mommy says my brain is like a computer," Ethan said, not looking up from his work. "She says I get it from my dad. He was an engineer."

Julian's throat tightened. He looked toward the bed, where Claire was reading a book to Leo in a soft, rhythmic voice. She met his gaze, her eyes soft with a quiet, shared understanding.

"Your dad... must be very proud of you," Julian whispered to the boy.

"He's in heaven," Ethan said matter-of-factly, clicking a solar panel into place. "Or... or in space. Mommy says he's very far away, but he watches us through the stars."

"Ethan," Claire called gently from the bed. "Why don't you go down to the playroom with Marcus for a little bit? Leo needs to take his pre-surgery nap, and Mommy needs to talk to... to Julian."

Ethan nodded, always the obedient twin, and let Marcus lead him out of the room. The door clicked shut, leaving the three of them in the quiet room.

Julian walked over to the bed, sitting on the small stool beside Leo. The little boy looked so small under the heavy hospital blankets, his skin pale, the blue veins visible on his temples.

"Are you scared, Leo?" Julian asked, his voice incredibly soft.

Leo shook his head, though his little fingers clutched his stuffed bear a bit tighter. "No. Dr. Chen says they're just going to put a little sticker on my heart to make it strong. Like a superhero."

"That's right," Julian said, his eyes burning. "A superhero sticker. And when you wake up, you're going to feel so strong you'll be able to run faster than the wind."

"Will you be here when I wake up?" Leo asked, his dark eyes locking onto Julian's face with that strange, intense recognition that had disarmed him in the corridor. "Mommy says you're a friend, but you look like me. Ethan says you have the same ears."

Julian looked at Claire, his chest aching. She nodded, her hand resting on Leo's shoulder, giving him permission.

"I am your dad, Leo," Julian said, the words finally breaking free from his chest. He took Leo's tiny, warm hand in his. "I was... far away for a long time because I didn't know where you were. But I found you now. And I am never, ever going to leave you again."

Leo stared at him for a long time, his small face processing the information with the serious, analytical look that Julian saw in the mirror every day. Then, slowly, a tiny, lopsided smile—the arrogant, beautiful slant that everyone called the Vance smile—spread across his face.

"I knew it," Leo whispered, closing his eyes. "The picture in the drawer... you had the same smile."

Within minutes, the boy had drifted off into a deep, peaceful sleep. Julian sat beside him, holding his hand, while Claire stood on the other side of the bed, her shoulders shaking with silent, relieved tears.
