Chapter 7 - The Live Broadcast

At 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, the living room of Julian’s private penthouse in downtown Seattle was converted into a television studio. Two massive cameras sat on tripods, their lenses trained on the leather sofa where Julian sat alone.

Thomas Higgins, the senior investigative reporter for the Seattle Times, adjusted his earpiece as the producer counted down from ten.

"We are live in three... two..."

"Good evening, Seattle," Higgins began, looking directly into the camera. "Tonight, we are coming to you live from the private residence of Julian Vance, the CEO of Vance Industries and one of the state's most prominent green-tech pioneers. In recent days, rumors of a major board shakeup and potential legal battles within the Vance family have rattled the markets. Tonight, Mr. Vance has agreed to sit down with us to clarify the situation."

Higgins turned to Julian, his expression professional but serious. "Mr. Vance, let’s start with the most pressing issue. There are rumors that your mother, Eleanor Vance, is preparing to call an emergency board meeting to remove you as CEO, citing a 'personal scandal' that threatens the company's integrity. How do you respond?"

Julian looked directly into the camera lens. He didn't look like a man under pressure; he looked like a king preparing to hand down a sentence.

"My mother is indeed calling a board meeting, Thomas," Julian said, his voice calm, steady, and clear. "But the scandal she is trying to hide is not mine. It is hers."

Higgins blinked, clearly caught off guard by the directness of the attack. "Hers? Can you explain?"

"Five years ago, my marriage to Claire Vance ended under what I believed to be tragic circumstances," Julian said. "My mother presented me with medical documents from the Sterling Clinic in Portland, claiming my wife was sterile and had married me under false pretenses. I believed those documents. I signed the divorce papers."

He leaned forward, his hands clasped between his knees, his eyes dark with a cold, focused anger.

"Forty-eight hours ago, I discovered the truth. My mother, Eleanor Vance, used three million dollars of the Vance Foundation's charitable funds to pay Dr. Sterling to falsify those medical records. Claire was not sterile. In fact, she was already pregnant with my twin sons when she was forced to sign those papers."

The silence in the room was absolute. The camera operators stared at Julian, their mouths open.

"My sons are currently four years old," Julian continued. "One of them, Leo, is currently at Swedish Medical Center, preparing for emergency heart surgery tomorrow morning to correct a genetic defect he inherited from me. While my ex-wife was working two jobs to pay for his medical care, my mother was using our family's wealth to keep them in hiding. I have already turned over the bank records, the email exchanges, and a signed confession from Dr. Sterling's administrative assistant to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the state District Attorney."

"Julian..." Higgins stammered, his reporter's instinct struggling to keep up with the scale of the confession. "You are accusing your own mother of charitable fraud, identity theft, and corporate conspiracy. This will destroy Vance Industries' stock value."

"Vance Industries will survive, Thomas, because the company is built on solid technology and dedicated workers," Julian said. "But if the price of protecting my sons and clearing my wife's name is the destruction of my family's company, then let it burn. I am stepping down as CEO of Vance Industries effective immediately to focus on my son's recovery."

He stood up, tearing the lapel microphone off his sweater.

"The interview is over, Thomas. I have a surgery to prepare for."
