Chapter 3 - The Red Carpet at the Atlantic Legacy Gala

The grand entrance of the Atlantic Legacy Center was a spectacle of flashing cameras, red carpets, and towering floral arrangements. Wall Street executives, European aristocrats, and local political figures milled about, sipping vintage Dom Pérignon while photographers shouted names from behind polished brass velvet ropes.

Near the center of the entrance hall stood Grant Holloway.

He looked every bit the successful, handsome executive he projected himself to be. His tuxedo fit impeccably, his dark hair was swept back, and his arm was wrapped securely around Delaney Cross. Delaney wore a shimmering wine-red dress that clung to her curves, her laughter loud enough to draw the eyes of passing photographers.

Standing nearby were Mavis and Brielle, holding crystal champagne flutes and conversing with the wives of local bank executives.

"Oh, Grant, you truly have an eye for talent," Mavis was saying loudly, ensuring the surrounding socialites could hear. "Delaney has brought so much elegance to the company. It’s such a relief to see you accompanied by someone who actually fits into our social standing."

"Mother, please," Grant said with a smug grin, though his eyes sparkled with pride. "Let's not speak of home. Tonight is about looking toward the future. Holloway Logistics is on the verge of closing a partnership with Bellamy Capital. Once the ink is dry on the twenty-million-dollar expansion credit tonight, we move into the national league."

"And where is your wife tonight, Grant?" asked Mrs. Sterling, a prominent Palm Beach matriarch whose family owned a major banking chain. "I thought Seraphina would be attending."

Brielle snorted into her champagne. "Seraphina? Please, Mrs. Sterling. My sister-in-law is a sweet girl, but she’s practically a recluse. She gets overwhelmed by shiny floors and loud music. She preferred to stay home and... reorganize the pantry, I suppose."

Grant gave a smooth, practiced chuckle. "Seraphina is a modest woman, Mrs. Sterling. She comes from very simple, humble origins. She lacks the stamina for events of this magnitude. I prefer to shield her from the pressures of high society. It’s kinder that way."

"How noble of you, Grant," Delaney chimed in, leaning her head against his shoulder. "Grant is always so protective of her. He really rescued her from a terrible life, you know. But business requires a certain... caliber of partner."

Before Mrs. Sterling could reply, a sudden, sharp hush fell over the carpet near the main entrance.

The heavy brass doors swung open.

The low hum of chatter, the clinking of glasses, and the shutter clicks of dozens of cameras stopped simultaneously.

A sleek black Maybach with tinted windows had pulled up to the foot of the red carpet. The driver, dressed in a sharp suit, stepped out and opened the rear door.

A leg encased in sheer black silk and a sky-high Christian Louboutin heel stepped onto the runner.

Then she emerged.

A collective gasp rippled through the grand foyer.

The woman was a vision of absolute, intoxicating power. The midnight-black velvet gown hugged her tall, graceful frame, trailing behind her like royalty. But it was the jewelry that made several high-society women audibly drop their breath. Around her neck sat the iconic Valerie Emeralds, glowing with an almost otherworldly green fire under the chandelier lights.

Photographers, recognizing the sheer value of the display, began flashing their cameras frantically, blinding the entrance in a sea of white light.

"Who is that?" Brielle whispered, her glass frozen halfway to her mouth. "Look at those emeralds... those can't be real. Nobody owns stones that big unless..."

"Is that... a European princess?" Mavis squinted, her sneer temporarily faltering under the overwhelming aura of the incoming guest. "Look at the way she walks. Grant, do you know who that is? You need to introduce yourself immediately!"

Grant stared at the woman as she stepped onto the red carpet, accompanied by Marcus Vance and flanked by four discreet, imposing bodyguards.

His heart did a strange, violent flip in his chest. There was something terrifyingly familiar about the line of her jaw, the straight, uncompromising posture, the slight turn of her head. But his mind violently rejected the thought before it could fully form.

No. Impossible. It couldn't be.

The woman he had left in the kitchen was wearing a faded grey apron, smelling of dish soap, with flour on her cheeks and wet hands. This woman looked like she owned the city, the hotel, and the bank that held the hotel’s mortgage.

As the mystery woman glided down the red carpet, the event coordinator—a man who had ignored Grant’s attempts to secure a better table earlier that evening—bowed deeply, his face pale with reverent panic.

"Welcome, Madam Chairwoman," the coordinator stammered. "Your private table on the central dais is prepared. The board of directors is already waiting."

The woman did not look left or right. She walked past the local elites with the cold indifference of a monarch passing statues.

As she drew level with Table 12, her eyes slowly turned.

Her hazel gaze locked directly onto Grant Holloway.

Grant froze. The champagne glass in his hand trembled slightly, a drop spilling over his knuckle.

For a horrifying, suspended second, the universe seemed to stop. The flashing cameras, the music, the laughter of the crowd all faded into a roaring vacuum in his ears.

May you like

She didn't smile. She didn't frown. She simply looked at him, then looked down at Delaney’s hand resting on his arm, and then looked back into his eyes with an expression of pure, unadulterated contempt.

Then, without saying a single word, Seraphina turned her head and walked up the steps toward the central VIP dais.
