Chapter 6 - The Deposition under Lights

I stepped up to the microphone, placing my hands flat on the wooden podium. The bright television lights warmed my face, and the soft hum of news cameras pointed directly at me filled the room.
"Good afternoon, Madam President, members of the council," I began, my voice clear, steady, and loud enough for every person in the room to hear. "I am here today to officially clarify Whitmore Logistics' position regarding the proposal submitted by The Almanzor Group."
I looked directly at Hassan, who was standing three feet away, cold sweat breaking out across his forehead.
"Whitmore Logistics has not signed, executed, or agreed to any partnership, sub-contract, or joint venture with The Almanzor Group," I declared firmly.
A sudden, collective gasp went through the auditorium. Reporters immediately began typing furiously on their laptops.
"That is false!" Hassan blurted out into his microphone, his voice cracking with sudden panic. "We have preliminary memoranda! We have personal assurances from the Whitmore family!"
"What Mr. Almanzor refers to as 'personal assurances,'" I continued smoothly, ignoring his outburst, "were in fact a coordinated effort by his son, Tariq Almanzor, and his brother, Omar Almanzor, to engage in corporate espionage, misrepresentation, and insider bidding."
The Council President slammed her gavel down. "Mrs. Whitmore, these are extremely serious allegations. Do you have documentation to support this?"
"I do, Madam President," I replied.
I gestured to James Chen, who walked down the aisle carrying a stack of bound legal volumes and a USB drive, handing them directly to the city clerk.
"Submitted into the official record today," I explained, "are verified audio recordings and certified transcripts spanning six months. These files contain explicit discussions by Hassan, Tariq, and Omar Almanzor detailing their plan to use a fraudulent alliance with my company to cover fourteen million dollars in private debt."
Tariq stood up abruptly at the defense table. "She’s twisting everything! She’s doing this out of personal revenge because I broke off our engagement!"
I turned my head slowly and looked at Tariq, a cold smile touching my lips.
"I didn't break off the engagement because of personal grievances, Tariq," I said into the microphone. "I ended it because your family made the mistake of speaking your illegal intentions aloud in Arabic—assuming that an American woman was too stupid to understand you."
The entire room erupted into chaos.
"Order! Order in this chamber!" the Council President shouted, slamming her gavel repeatedly.
In the midst of the roaring crowd and shouting reporters, three plainclothes officers from the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department stepped through the side doors of the auditorium, moving directly toward the Almanzor table.
The lead investigator held up a folded legal document.
"Hassan Almanzor, Omar Almanzor, and Tariq Almanzor," the officer announced loudly over the noise. "You are under arrest for municipal bribery, wire fraud, and grand larceny conspiracy. Stand up and put your hands behind your backs."
The flashbulbs of twenty news cameras exploded simultaneously, capturing the exact second the steel handcuffs clicked around Tariq’s wrists.

As the officers led them out through the center aisle, Tariq looked back at me, his eyes filled with a terrifying mix of defeat, shame, and realization.
I stood at the podium, unmoving, watching them disappear into the back of a police cruiser—the final chapter of their greedy, arrogant illusion closing forever.
