Chapter 5 - THE SHOWDOWN AT THE LAKE HOUSE

The Vance family lake house in Logan, Ohio, was a beautiful, cedar-planked property overlooking the frozen waters of Lake Logan. It had been Harold’s pride and joy—the ultimate symbol of his "success." But on Saturday morning, it became the final battleground for his family’s ruined empire.
I arrived in my black corporate SUV, accompanied by Marcus Vance and two private investigators. I didn't wear a handyman’s uniform today. I wore a heavy black overcoat, leather gloves, and a look of absolute determination.
We walked up the snow-covered steps and knocked firmly on the heavy oak door.
It took a full minute before the door opened. Harold stood there. The arrogant, wealthy patriarch looked ten years older. He was wearing a stained sweater, his hair was uncombed, and there was a glass of cheap whiskey in his hand despite it being eleven o'clock in the morning.
When he saw me, his eyes flared with a desperate, volatile mixture of hatred and fear. "You," he growled. "The magnificent CEO. The man who ruined my life."
"Can we come in, Harold?" I asked smoothly. "Or would you prefer we discuss your immediate eviction on the front porch?"
Harold stepped back, allowing us to enter the spacious, high-ceilinged living room. Sitting on the leather sofa was Patricia, his wife, who was quietly weeping into a tissue, and Olivia, who sat staring at the floor, looking completely numb.
"What do you want, Ryan?" Olivia asked, her voice barely a whisper. "You have the company. You have the divorce. You've humiliated us in front of the entire city. What else is there to take?"
"I'm here to collect what belongs to my company, Olivia," I said.
Marcus Vance stepped forward, opening his briefcase and presenting a legal document to Harold. "Mr. Vance, we have received full, authenticated cooperation from Sarah Harrington, your daughter-in-law. She has provided our legal team with the secondary accounting books that were hidden in Julian's safe. Those records explicitly show that you used $740,000 of Carter Property Services corporate funds to pay off the remaining balance of this specific property."
Harold’s glass rattled against his ring as his grip tightened. "That was... that was a deferred compensation package! The board approved it!"
"There is no board, Harold," I said, stepping closer to him. "I am the board. I am the sole owner. I never approved a single penny of that money. You forged the signatures of my chief financial officer on three separate credit applications."
Patricia looked up, her face twisted in terror. "Harold... what is he talking about? You told me you got a promotion! You told me the company loved your work!"
"Shut up, Patricia!" Harold snapped, his composure entirely fracturing. He turned back to me, his teeth bared. "You think you're a big man now, Ryan? You spent nine years pretending to be a loser! You let us treat you like that! You set us up!"
"No, Harold. You set yourself up the moment you mistook my patience for weakness," I said, my voice dropping into a cold, hard rhythm. "I tolerated your insults because I wanted to keep my family together. But when you dragged my daughter out into the snow, you crossed a line that no man can ever step back over. You broke the contract of family, so I am enforcing the contract of law."
Marcus Vance tapped the document on the table. "Mr. Vance, to avoid immediate arrest and a public trial that will ensure your sons face maximum security federal prison sentences, we are presenting a voluntary asset forfeiture agreement. You will sign over the deed to this lake house, your primary residence in Columbus, and all remaining liquid assets to Carter Property Services to offset the structural fraud."
"And if I refuse?" Harold snarled, his chest heaving. "I'll hire the best defense team in the state! I'll fight you in court for the next ten years!"
"With what money, Harold?" I asked quietly. "Every bank account you own has been frozen by a temporary restraining order as of nine o'clock this morning. Your defense attorneys won't even answer your calls when they find out your retainer checks are going to bounce. You are completely, utterly broke."

The reality of the trap slammed shut on Harold Vance’s chest. He looked at his wife, who was now hysterically crying. He looked at Olivia, who refused to even look at him, realizing that her father’s greed had cost her a life of unimaginable security.
Slowly, his knees buckled, and the wealthy patriarch dropped into a chair, looking like a hollowed-out shell of a man. With a trembling hand, he reached for the pen Marcus held out to him.
