Chapter 8 - THE NEW FOUNDATION

The East Columbus Community Development Project was my new personal passion. For years, Carter Property Services had focused exclusively on high-end commercial properties and luxury apartment complexes. But after the destruction of the Vance family’s influence, I redirected a massive portion of our corporate profits into building affordable, energy-efficient housing for single parents and low-income families.

Clara Hayes had been the driving force behind this vision. She had started at my company eight years ago as an entry-level property manager, working her way up through sheer intelligence and hard work—the exact opposite of how the Vance family had operated. Over the last few months of working late nights to restructure the company, Clara and I had developed a deep, mutual respect that was slowly, naturally evolving into something much more profound.

On a warm Friday afternoon in May, Clara and I stood on the dusty construction site of the new community center. The steel framing was already up, rising proud against the clear blue sky.

"We’re ahead of schedule, Ryan," Clara said, shading her eyes with a hardhat as she looked up at the structure. "The first twelve residential units will be ready for occupancy before the winter hits. We’ve already received over two hundred applications from single mothers in the area."

"Good," I said, looking at her side profile. She had a smudge of drywall dust on her cheek, and her eyes were bright with a genuine passion for helping people. "I want to make sure the utility guarantees are fully funded by the corporate foundation. No one who lives in these buildings should ever have to worry about their heat being turned off because they're short on a bill."

Clara turned to look at me, a soft, understanding expression softening her features. "You're still thinking about that Christmas, aren't you?"

"I think about it every day," I admitted quietly. "Not with anger anymore. Just as a reminder of what happens when you let the wrong people manage your foundation. I spent a decade building walls for people who didn't appreciate them. Now, I want to build doors for people who actually need them."

Clara stepped closer, her hand lightly resting on my forearm. "You’ve already built those doors, Ryan. And you didn't do it as the 'multimillionaire CEO.' You did it as the man who knows exactly how to fix what’s broken. That's why this company is strong."

I looked down at her hand, then into her eyes. For the first time in ten years, I felt a sense of peace that didn't require me to hide who I was. "Are you free for dinner tonight, Clara? And I don't mean a corporate working dinner. I mean a real date. Just you and me."

Clara’s face lit up with a brilliant, beautiful smile. "I’ve been waiting for you to ask me that since January, Mr. Carter. Pick me up at seven. And wear the Carhartt jacket—I always liked you best when you looked like a man who wasn't afraid to get his hands dirty."
