Chapter 6 - The Trap at the Gala

Two weeks later.
The autumn leaves had turned brilliant shades of crimson and gold across New England.
While peace had slowly begun to return to the Mercer home—with Lily sleeping through the night in her own bed and laughing with Mara in the gardens—a storm was brewing in the corporate world outside.
Julian Vance had formally filed a claim with the Maritime Licensing Board, producing a forged assignment document claiming that Hayes Maritime had transferred its proprietary port tracking patents to Vance Logistics twenty years ago.
If the board approved the claim at their annual Autumn Harbor Gala in New York on Saturday night, Vance would legally seize control of forty percent of Mercer North’s shipping routes.
On Friday afternoon, Daniel sat in his study with Marcus Vance, his chief legal counsel, and Mara.
“We can’t stop the board vote without the original physical patent deed signed by Arthur Hayes,” Marcus explained, placing a legal brief on the desk. “Julian Vance’s forged document is exceptionally well done. Without Ellie’s original cipher sheet to prove the secondary trust structure, the board is going to rule in Vance’s favor.”
Daniel looked at Mara, who was standing by the window holding her acoustic guitar.
Over the last two weeks, Mara had worked tirelessly with Lily, piecing together the fragments of the lullaby. They had uncovered three verses of the song, but the final, crucial line—the mathematical key that unlocked the digital archive where Arthur Hayes had stored the master deed—was still missing.
“We don't need the whole deed,” Mara said suddenly, turning around.
Daniel frowned. “What do you mean?”
“Vance doesn't know how much of the cipher you have,” Mara explained, her eyes sharp and brilliant with intelligence. “He thinks he stole the only copy from the piano four months ago. He doesn't know that Lily remembers the song, and he certainly doesn't know that Ellie built a secondary biometric backup into the original music box at the Hayes Estate.”
Daniel stood up slowly. “The music box in Martha’s Vineyard.”
“Ellie’s family home,” Mara nodded. “If we go to the gala tomorrow night, we don't go to defend ourselves. We go to set a trap. We let Vance present his forged document to the board, and then we play the true lullaby in front of three hundred witnesses.”
Marcus looked at Mara like she had lost her mind. “Miss Bennett, this is a multi-million-dollar corporate hearing, not a musical performance!”
“It is a musical performance, Marcus,” Daniel said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, confident tone that made both men freeze. He looked at Mara, a slow, fiercely proud smile touching his lips. “Because the cipher was written in notes, not numbers. Julian Vance stole a piece of paper he couldn't read.”
Daniel walked around his desk, standing right in front of Mara.

“Will you come with me to New York?” Daniel asked softly, his eyes searching her face with an intensity that made Mara’s heart skip a beat.
“I won't just come with you,” Mara smiled back, her voice unwavering. “I’m bringing Lily.”
