Chapter 10 - The Lullaby Under the Stars

Six months later.
Early June in Martha’s Vineyard was a dream of blue skies, warm sea breezes, and blooming hydrangeas.
The old Hayes seaside estate sat high on a grassy cliff overlooking the sparkling waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The historic wooden house had been completely restored, its wraparound porch decorated with white rocking chairs and colorful flower boxes.
Tonight was the night of Daniel and Mara’s wedding.
It had been an intimate, beautiful ceremony held on the lawn at sunset, attended only by close friends, Mrs. Nolan, Marcus Vance, and the staff who had become like family.
Now, as the stars began to twinkle across the dark velvet sky, a small bonfire crackled softly on the sandy beach below the cliff.
The guests were inside the main house enjoying dinner and dancing, but down on the beach, three figures sat together on a thick wool blanket near the fire.
Daniel sat with his back against a smooth piece of driftwood, his arm wrapped securely around Mara, who was wearing a stunning, bohemian white lace dress with flowers woven into her hair.
Lily sat in Mara’s lap, wearing a matching flower crown, resting her head against Mara’s chest, drowsy from an evening of running along the shoreline.
Mara held her acoustic guitar across her lap, softly plucking the strings in time with the gentle rhythm of the ocean waves crashing against the sand.
“Sing it, Mommy,” Lily whispered softly, using the word Mommy naturally and without fear, knowing in her small, healed heart that loving Mara did not mean forgetting Ellie.
Daniel looked down at Mara, his eyes filled with a peace he had never known in his entire life.
Mara smiled, kissed the top of Lily’s head, and began to sing softly into the quiet summer night:
“When the ocean turns to blue,
The little boat comes home to you.
Across the waves, through night and storm,
Love keeps you safe, love keeps you warm.”
Daniel joined his voice with hers, his deep baritone blending harmoniously with her clear soprano, singing the second verse they had completed together:
“The stars will guide you through the dark,
A quiet flame, a golden spark.
No distance far, no shadow deep,
Can break the promise that we keep.”
Lily let out a soft, contented sigh, her small eyes closing as she drifted off into a deep, peaceful sleep in their arms.
Daniel leaned over, resting his forehead against Mara’s, their lips meeting in a gentle, warm kiss beneath the vast canopy of stars.

The pain of the past was gone. The noise of the world had faded away.
In its place was the sweet, eternal melody of a family that had found its way home.
