Chapter 3 - THE COLD AWAKENING

At 8:15 AM at 1420 Bellevue Heights, the temperature inside the master bedroom had begun to drop precipitously.
Graham groaned, rolling over in his king-sized bed, wrapping the heavy goose-down duvet tighter around his shoulders. He reached for his phone on the nightstand to check the morning financial reports, but the screen displayed a strange message: NETWORK CONNECTION UNAVAILABLE. DEVICE DISABLED BY SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR.
Frowning, he swung his legs out of bed. The floorboards felt unnaturally cold against his bare feet. He walked to the thermostat on the hallway wall. The digital display was completely dead.
"What is wrong with the staff?" he muttered to himself, grabbing a silk robe and marching down the Grand staircase. "Maria! James! Why is the heat off?"
He reached the kitchen, expecting the smell of fresh espresso and warm pastries. Instead, the kitchen was dark and quiet. The industrial refrigerator was completely unlit, its doors slightly ajar, the ambient hum of electricity entirely absent.
His mother, Vivian, descended the stairs in a flurry of pink silk and velvet slippers, her face pale with irritation.
"Graham! What is happening?" she demanded, shivering as she crossed her arms. "The water in my bathroom is freezing, the lights won't turn on, and none of the servants are responding! I went to the staff quarters, and James was packing his bags!"
"Packing his bags?" Graham blinked, finally sensing a cold prickle of anxiety at the base of his neck. "What are you talking about?"
Before Vivian could answer, a loud, aggressive pounding echoed through the heavy front doors.
"See who that is!" Vivian snapped. "It’s probably the local utility company making a mistake. Tell them who we are! Demand that they fix this immediately!"
Graham walked to the foyer, pulling open the massive oak door.
Standing on the porch were four men in heavy winter coats. Two wore the formal uniforms of county sheriff deputies, while the other two carried thick digital clipboards and heavy iron chains. Behind them, idling in the driveway, were two flatbed tow trucks.
"Graham Harrington?" the lead deputy asked, his voice flat and clinical.
"Yes," Graham said, puffing out his chest and attempting to project executive authority. "What is the meaning of this intrusion? My family owns this estate, and—"
"You don't own anything here, sir," the deputy interrupted, pulling a thick packet of legal documents from his jacket and pressing it against Graham's chest. "This is an emergency order of immediate possession and eviction served on behalf of Bellevue Holdings LLC and Vale International Trust."
Graham stared at the papers, his mind refusing to process the bold black words stamped across the top: NOTICE OF UNLAWFUL DETAINER & IMMEDIATE VACATE ORDER.
"This is ridiculous!" Vivian shrieked, running to the door. "Bellevue Holdings is our private landlord! We have lived here for fifteen years! My husband founded Harrington Luxe!"
"Bellevue Holdings is a subsidiary of Vale International, ma'am," the deputy replied coldly. "And as of 6:00 AM today, your residential authorization was terminated due to material breach of lease terms and failure of equity ownership. You have precisely thirty minutes to gather your personal clothing and vacate the premises."
"Thirty minutes?!" Vivian screamed. "My diamonds! My furs! My antique furniture!"
"The furnishings, art, and fixtures are registered under the estate's inventory log," the second deputy noted, checking his tablet. "They are locked under a court-ordered preservation injunction. You may take what clothes you can carry in two soft bags each. Everything else remains on the property."
"Graham, do something!" Vivian grabbed her son's arm, her voice rising in sheer panic. "Call the CEO of Harrington Luxe! Call Arthur! Call anyone!"
Graham frantically pulled his personal cell phone from his robe pocket, but the device was frozen on a white screen with a single red warning icon: CORPORATE ACCOUNT TERMINATED.
Outside in the driveway, the metallic crunch of winch cables echoed through the cold morning air as the tow truck operators hooked heavy chains around the axles of Graham’s custom Range Rover and Vivian’s Bentley.
"Hey! Stop!" Graham yelled, running out onto the snow-covered steps in his robe. "That’s my car!"
"Vehicles registered to Harrington Luxe Fleet Management," the tow operator shouted back over the roar of the diesel engine. "Repossession order #4092. Account closed for corporate fraud."

Graham stood on the freezing stone steps, the icy wind tearing through his silk robe, watching as his prestige, his home, and his luxury status were systematically dismantled in front of his eyes.
And he still had no idea that the woman he had kicked into the snow eight hours ago was holding the remote control.
