Chapter 7 - THE LEGAL SLAUGHTER

Three weeks later.
The high-ceilinged room of the Family and Probate Court was silent except for the low hum of the climate control system.
I sat at the primary desk, dressed in a sharp navy-blue powersuit, flanked by Eleanor Vance and three senior partners from the premier family law firm in the state. My hair was styled impeccably, and my face was calm, serene, and radiant.
Across the aisle, sitting at the public defender’s table, were Graham and Vivian.
They wore orange state-issued jumpsuits. Graham’s hair had been shaved short per facility regulations, and he had lost at least fifteen pounds. His eyes were sunken, staring at the mahogany table in utter defeat. Vivian sat beside him, her face aged ten years, her manicured nails broken and raw, her eyes darting around the majestic courtroom as if searching for a escape hatch that didn't exist.
Because they were held on high-risk financial fraud charges with a $2 million cash bail that neither could afford, they had been brought to the custody hearing in restraints.
Judge Katherine Harris, a formidable woman known for her zero-tolerance policy toward domestic negligence, reviewed the thick leather-bound binder of evidence resting on her bench.
"Mr. Harrington," Judge Harris began, her voice echoing through the silent room. "I have reviewed the police reports from the night of January 14th. I have also reviewed the security footage captured by the driveway cameras at 1420 Bellevue Heights."
Graham flinched. He didn't look up.
"The footage," Judge Harris continued, her tone dripping with deep judicial disgust, "shows you physically pushing your wife, who was ten days post-caesarean delivery, down a flight of icy stone steps while carrying two newborn infants. It shows your mother, Mrs. Vivian Harrington, tossing a suitcase at her head and shouting obscenities while the temperature outside was nineteen degrees Fahrenheit."
Vivian opened her mouth to speak, but her assigned public defender—a young, exhausted woman who knew she was standing in front of an absolute legal steamroller—quickly placed a hand on her arm, shaking her head.
"The defense has submitted a request for supervised visitation and shared custody," Judge Harris noted, turning a page. "Ms. Vance, what is your client's position?"
Eleanor Vance stood up smoothly, adjusting her buttoned jacket.
"Your Honor," Eleanor said, her voice resonant and clear. "My client, Ms. Evelyn Vale, is requesting a total and permanent termination of Mr. Graham Harrington’s parental rights. Furthermore, we are requesting a permanent lifetime restraining order barring both defendants from approaching within two thousand feet of Ms. Vale or her children."
"On what grounds, Ms. Vance?"
"On the grounds of severe child endangerment, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and absolute financial and moral unfitness," Eleanor stated, pulling a secondary document from her brief. "Additionally, Mr. Harrington is currently facing federal indictment for grand embezzlement, which carries a mandatory minimum sentence of twelve years in federal custody. He has zero financial capacity, zero residential stability, and has demonstrated a complete lack of paternal instinct."
Judge Harris looked down at Graham. "Mr. Harrington, do you have anything to say before I rule on this petition?"
Graham slowly raised his head. His eyes met mine across the aisle.
For three years, he had looked at me with condescension, seeing a girl he could manipulate, a girl whose presence was a concession to his benevolence. Now, looking across at the woman who controlled an eight-billion-dollar empire, a woman surrounded by the top legal minds in the country, he saw the truth.
"I... I was wrong," Graham choked out, tears pooling in his bloodshot eyes. "Evelyn... please. They're my sons. Just let me see them when I get out. Please... I'll do anything. I'll work for you. I'll clean your office. Just don't erase me."
I didn't blink. I didn't shift in my seat. I looked at him with the cold, absolute finality of an executioner.
"You erased yourself, Graham," I said softly, my voice carrying clearly across the quiet courtroom. "The night you pushed us into the snow."
Judge Harris brought her heavy wooden gavel down with a sharp, resounding CRACK.
"Parental rights of Graham Harrington are hereby permanently terminated," Judge Harris ruled. "Sole legal and physical custody of Leo Vale and Oliver Vale is granted exclusively to Evelyn Vale. Restraining orders are issued in perpetuity. Court is adjourned."

Vivian let out a loud, theatrical wail as the bailiffs stood up, grabbing her arm to lead her back to the holding cells. Graham collapsed forward, his forehead pressing against the cold mahogany table, weeping uncontrollably as the steel chains around his waist rattled in the quiet room.
I stood up, smoothed my jacket, and walked out of the courtroom without looking back.
