Chapter 7 - The Healing Light

A month passed.

The storm that had surrounded Ethan’s life dissolved entirely. Arthur Whitmore resigned from the port authority board under federal scrutiny, and Celeste Whitmore left the country for Europe, disgraced and blacklisted from high society.

At the Calloway estate, winter had transformed the sprawling grounds into a peaceful, white wonderland.

Inside the primary master suite—which Ethan had completely renovated into a grand, warm nursery and living space—Nora sat in a plush rocking chair near the window. She was thirty-six weeks pregnant now, her belly beautifully round.

Ethan stepped into the room, carrying a large wooden cradle he had spent three weeks hand-crafting in his estate workshop.

He set the cradle down near the fireplace, wiping a dust of wood shavings off his sleeves.

Nora looked at the exquisite, hand-carved cherry wood cradle. It had delicate floral patterns carved along the edges and tiny star motifs near the headboard.

“Ethan... it’s breathtaking,” Nora gasped, her eyes shining with emotion. “You built this yourself?”

Ethan walked over, kneeling beside her rocking chair, resting his hands gently on her knees. “I wanted her first bed to be made by someone who loves her.”

Nora’s heart skipped a beat. Someone who loves her.

Over the past month, Ethan hadn't just protected her—he had courted her with a quiet, breathtaking devotion. He came home early from work every day to walk with her through the gardens. He sat with her during every ultrasound appointment, holding her hand while they listened to the baby’s strong heartbeat. He bought her books, filled her room with her favorite white peonies, and stayed up late into the night talking with her about life, dreams, and the future.

The cold, ruthless billionaire the world knew didn't exist in this room. Here, he was just Ethan—the man whose soul had been saved by a kind waitress fifteen years ago, and who was now giving his entire heart to her in return.

“Ethan,” Nora whispered softly, her fingers running through his thick, dark hair. “Why are you doing all of this? The cradle, the doctors, taking me into your home... you’ve paid back the four hundred dollars a thousand times over.”

Ethan looked up into her eyes, his expression so filled with raw, unshielded love that Nora’s breath caught in her throat.

“You think I’m doing this out of gratitude, Nora?” Ethan asked softly, taking her hands in his.

Nora swallowed hard. “Aren't you?”

“At first, I thought I was,” Ethan confessed honestly. “When I realized who you were in that ballroom, I felt an overwhelming duty to protect the woman who had saved me when I was at my lowest. But over the last four weeks... watching you laugh, seeing your strength, hearing your voice every morning...”

Ethan leaned closer, his face inches from hers.

“I didn't build this cradle because of four hundred dollars fifteen years ago, Nora,” Ethan whispered, his dark eyes shining with intense emotion. “I built it because I’m completely, head-over-heels in love with you. And I want to be a father to your daughter.”

Tears overflowed Nora’s eyes, spilling warm paths down her cheeks. The deep wounds of her past—the loneliness, the fear, the feeling of being unlovable—healed completely under the warmth of his confession.

“Ethan...” she sobbed softly.

“You don't have to answer now,” Ethan added quickly, his voice filled with gentle care. “You’ve been through so much. I just needed you to know the truth.”

Nora leaned forward, cupping his face in both of her hands, and pressed her lips against his in a deep, sweet, passionate kiss.

Ethan stiffened in surprise for half a second, then wrapped his broad arms tightly around her, holding her gently against his chest, returning the kiss with a fierce, tender devotion that made the cold winter outside disappear completely.

When they finally pulled back, resting their foreheads together, Nora smiled through her tears.

“I’ve loved you since the night you stood up to Celeste for me, Ethan,” Nora whispered. “I love you so much.”
