Chapter 8 - The Arrival

Two weeks later, on a snowy midnight in late January, the time finally arrived.

Nora woke up in the primary master bedroom with a sharp, gasping contraction that made her squeeze the bedsheets tightly.

Ethan, who had been sleeping in the adjoining lounge room to be near her, was at her side within two seconds.

“Nora? Is it time?” Ethan asked, his voice alert, his face instantly sharp.

“My water just broke,” Nora gasped, holding his hand tightly as another strong wave of pain rolled through her lower back.

Ethan didn't panic. He moved with the precision of a military officer. He helped her into a warm coat, carried her downstairs in his arms, and placed her gently into the back of his heated SUV, where Nurse Evelyn was already waiting with medical supplies.

Within twenty minutes, under police escort arranged by Marcus, the SUV pulled up to the private wing of Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan.

Dr. Palmer and a team of top obstetricians were waiting at the entrance with a wheelchair.

For the next eight hours, Ethan never left Nora’s side.

He stood beside her hospital bed, wearing scrubs, letting her crush his hand through every agonizing contraction. He wiped the cold sweat from her forehead with a warm damp cloth, whispered words of love and encouragement into her ear, and held her steady when the pain felt overwhelming.

“You’re doing so well, my love,” Ethan whispered, kissing her sweaty temple. “You’re the strongest woman I’ve ever known.”

“I can’t... Ethan, it hurts so much,” Nora cried out, her face flushed, her body trembling with exhaustion.

“Look at me, Nora,” Ethan commanded softly, taking her chin gently in his hand, forcing her to focus on his steady, warm eyes. “Look at me. We’re doing this together. In a few minutes, our little girl is going to be in your arms. Stay with me.”

Nora looked into his dark eyes, finding the infinite strength she needed. She took a deep, ragged breath, nodded, and pushed with everything she had left in her body.

At 7:42 a.m., as the golden morning sun broke over the Manhattan skyline, a loud, clear, healthy cry echoed through the delivery room.

“It’s a girl!” Dr. Palmer announced with a triumphant smile. “A healthy, beautiful baby girl!”

Nora fell back against the pillows, sobbing with pure relief and joy.

Dr. Palmer quickly cleaned the baby, wrapped her in a warm pink blanket, and handed her directly to Ethan.

Ethan’s hands—hands that had signed billion-dollar deals and fought off corporate giants—trembled violently as he held the tiny seven-pound bundle.

He looked down at the baby’s face. She had a mop of soft dark hair, tiny pink cheeks, and dark brown eyes that opened slowly, looking up at him.

Tears streamed down Ethan Calloway’s face—the first time he had cried in fifteen years.

He walked slowly over to Nora’s bedside, kneeling down, and gently laid the baby against Nora’s chest.

“She’s perfect, Nora,” Ethan choked out, his voice thick with tears. “She’s absolutely perfect.”

Nora cradled her daughter against her skin, weeping with pure, unadulterated happiness. “Look at her, Ethan... she has your chin.”

Ethan smiled through his tears, wrapping his arms around both of them, kissing Nora’s lips and then pressing a gentle kiss against his newborn daughter’s tiny forehead.

“What are we naming her?” Ethan asked softly.

Nora looked up at him, her eyes shining with love.

“Hope,” Nora whispered. “Hope Calloway.”

Ethan’s heart swelled to the point of bursting. “Hope Calloway. It’s perfect.”
