Chapter 10 - The New Beginning

One year after the wedding that never was, I stood on the open wooden deck of my newly renovated beach house in Tybee Island, Georgia.

The evening sun was setting over the ocean, painting the sky in deep shades of gold, violet, and soft pink. The sound of gentle waves rolling onto the sand provided a peaceful, rhythmic soundtrack to the quiet evening.

Behind me, the glass sliding doors pushed open softly.

Stepping onto the deck was Julian Vance—Victor Vance’s estranged thirty-two-year-old nephew.

Julian had spent five years working as an independent environmental maritime attorney, having publicly cut ties with his corrupt uncle's corporate empire years before I ever met Grant. When the scandal had broken, Julian had been the key whistleblower who helped my legal team decipher the complex regulatory codes needed to secure the Savannah Terminal lease.

Julian held two glasses of chilled white wine, handing one to me with a warm, genuine smile.

"You're quiet tonight, Claire," Julian said gently, leaning his elbows against the wooden railing, looking out at the sunset.

"I was just thinking about how much can change in twelve months," I replied, taking a small sip of wine. "A year ago tonight, I was sitting in a bridal suite trying to convince myself that a guy in a tailored tuxedo loved me."

"Grant was a fool who looked at a diamond and only saw something he could pawn," Julian said softly, turning to look at me, his blue eyes filled with undeniable warmth and respect. "He never actually saw you."

"And what do you see, Julian?" I asked, looking into his eyes.

Julian set his glass down on the wooden ledge, reaching out gently to take my hand in his—his grip warm, strong, and completely honest.

"I see a woman who doesn't need anyone to build her an empire," Julian said softly. "Because she already owns the land, the foundation, and the sky above it."

I laughed—a light, free, beautiful sound that carried out across the dark ocean waters.

For the first time in my life, there were no hidden ledgers, no secret motives, no corporate proxies, and no lies. There was only the open sea, the warm summer wind, and a future that belonged entirely to me.

I clinked my glass against his, looked out at the infinite horizon, and welcomed the dawn of my brand-new life.
