Chapter 2 - The Fall of Apex Logistics

While Nathaniel was staring out into the dark Atlantic skies, thousands of miles away in Chicago, the corporate world of Apex Logistics was experiencing a seismic collapse.

Arthur Vance, the managing director and CEO of Apex, sat in his sprawling top-floor office overlooking the frozen Loop. It was 11:00 PM, but the lights were blazing. On his desk sat three encrypted mobile phones, all flashing red.

Apex Logistics was a mid-tier freight forwarding company. For the last five years, their primary international shipping lanes—especially the lucrative European and Asian transshipment corridors—had been quietly backed by an anonymous holding entity known as Meridian Trust.

Arthur had never met the principals of Meridian Trust. He only knew that every time Apex needed a liquidity injection, or every time a massive customs hurdle disappeared overnight, a simple wire transfer arrived from a Zurich clearinghouse with a signature stamp of a simple crown.

Until tonight.

At exactly 9:15 PM EST, a single electronic document had been routed directly to Arthur’s private terminal, bypassing corporate secretaries and legal counsel.

It was a total contract revocation.

Effective immediately, Meridian Trust withdraws all capital guarantees, facility leases, and maritime routing privileges from Apex Logistics.

Arthur had laughed at first, thinking it was a late-night prank. Then his phone rang. It was the chief financial officer, screaming that their primary bank accounts had been frozen by federal mandate under a multi-jurisdictional asset seizure order.

Then came the second notification: The lease on the Apex headquarters building, owned by a subsidiary of the Valois-Orléans Crown Estate, was terminated. Eviction notice to follow within forty-eight hours.

Arthur grabbed his landline and dialed Nathaniel Brooks’s mobile phone.

He didn't care that Nathaniel was on vacation in Paris with his new girlfriend. Nathaniel was the vice president of regional accounts; he had signed off on the last three quarterly compliance audits.

The phone rang four times. Then voicemail.

"Brooks, where the hell are you?!" Arthur roared into the receiver, his face purple with rage. "Our accounts are frozen! The whole damn company is going under! Call me back the second you get this, or I swear to God I'll personally make sure you never work in logistics again!"

Arthur slammed the phone down, unaware that Nathaniel’s phone was currently sitting in the pocket of a discarded jacket in a hotel room in Paris, completely dead, while Nathaniel himself was staring blankly at the minibar in a state of catatonic shock.
