Chapter 8 - The Shadow of Ambition

Five years passed.

In a modest, fluorescent-lit breakroom of a regional shipping depot in Toledo, Ohio, a forty-year-old man with thinning hair and deep, permanent bags under his eyes stood pouring stale coffee from a stained glass pot.

Nathaniel Brooks looked at his reflection in the microwave door.

His cheap suit was gone, replaced by a high-vis neon safety vest over a faded company polo. His hands, once soft and accustomed to signing corporate checks, were calloused and scarred from loading pallets on the night shift.

He never remarried. Harper had vanished into the Los Angeles modeling scene two weeks after they returned from Paris, never to be heard from again. His friends from Apex Logistics had long since deleted his number. His mother had passed away the previous winter, leaving him the small, drafty suburban house with a mortgage he could barely service on his warehouse salary.

Sometimes, late at night when the warehouse was quiet and the hum of the conveyor belts filled the empty space, Nathaniel would turn on his phone and search for international news.

He didn't search for logistics or stock market reports anymore.

He searched for House of Valois-Orléans.

And there she would be.

On the front page of European financial and cultural magazines. Princess Vivian, presiding over international charity summits, cutting ribbons for children's hospitals funded by her personal foundation, standing beside prime ministers and kings with a grace that took his breath away.

And beside her, in photographs captured by long-lens paparazzi, was a bright, laughing five-year-old girl with dark curls and sharp, intelligent eyes—a princess who would one day inherit a throne Nathaniel had once stood next to without ever realizing its worth.

One evening, as Nathaniel sat alone in his empty kitchen eating a bowl of instant ramen, the television news flickered on in the background.

A special report on international philanthropy flashed across the screen.

“Today, Her Serene Highness Princess Vivian of Valois-Orléans announced a forty-million-dollar global education grant for single mothers entering the workforce, naming the initiative after her late mother, Eleanor Sinclair...”

Nathaniel stopped chewing.

He looked at the television screen. Vivian was standing at a podium in Geneva, speaking in three languages with effortless poise, her smile radiant and completely free of any shadow.

He looked down at his own hands—dirty, tired, and worn out by the endless pursuit of a greatness he was never meant to hold.

He finally understood what the old proverb meant: He who seeks to grasp the stars while standing in the mud will only succeed in dirtying his hands.

He had held a star in his arms for three years, and he had thrown her away because he didn't know how to look up.
