Chapter 5 - The Turning of the Board

The boardroom of Bennett Development was usually a place where Daniel felt like a god. Today, it felt like a courtroom where he was the condemned.
The three independent board members—Arthur Pendelton, an old-school real estate mogul; Elena Rostova, a brilliant infrastructure financier; and Marcus Vance, the COO—sat in solemn silence. Claire and Victoria sat on one side of the mahogany table, while Daniel sat alone on the other. His lawyers had advised him not to attend, but his pride wouldn't allow him to stay away.
Arthur Pendelton cleared his throat. "Daniel, we've reviewed the findings presented by Vanguard Forensic Accounting. The evidence of commingling funds and the unauthorized use of corporate reserves to acquire personal real estate for Ms. Cole is... undeniable. It puts our federal contracts in extreme jeopardy."
"It was a temporary loan!" Daniel lied, his voice desperate. "I was going to pay it back after the quarter closed! It's a standard accounting maneuver!"
"It's a felony, Daniel," Elena Rostova said coldly. "And more importantly, the city has made it clear that if your name remains on the Lakeshore Project bid as CEO, they will disqualify us immediately due to the ongoing litigation and ethical violations."
Daniel looked around the room, searching for an ally, but found none. He looked at Marcus, his loyal COO for ten years. Marcus looked away, unable to meet his eyes.
"Therefore," Arthur continued, "the board has voted unanimously to ask for your immediate, voluntary leave of absence pending a full internal audit. If you refuse, we will vote to terminate your contract for cause, which will void your golden parachute."
Daniel felt a cold sweat break out across his back. "And who is going to run the company? Marcus? He doesn't have the vision for the Lakeshore Project! The company will collapse!"
Arthur looked toward Claire. "The board has asked Claire to step in as Interim CEO and General Counsel. She has a complete understanding of the legal frameworks, she has the trust of our primary sub-contractors, and the city compliance office has already indicated they will accept the Lakeshore bid immediately if she signs it."
Daniel laughed, a harsh, hysterical sound. "Claire? She hasn't practiced law in over a decade! She’s been organizing charity galas and picking out paint swatches!"
Elena Rostova glared at Daniel. "While you were out playing golf and spending corporate money on your mistress, Daniel, Claire was the one who personally settled the labor dispute with the steelworkers' union last year without costing us a single day of productivity. She did it quietly, behind the scenes, while you took the credit in the press. We know exactly who keeps this company running."
Daniel looked at Claire. She met his gaze with absolute serenity. She didn't look triumphant; she looked professional, capable, and completely detached from the emotional toxicity he always brought into the room.
"I accept the board's appointment," Claire said clearly. "My first act as Interim CEO will be to sign the Lakeshore Project proposal and to officially terminate the employment of Madison Cole from the marketing department, effective immediately, due to a conflict of interest and unauthorized use of corporate assets."
Daniel closed his eyes. His empire was gone. His title, his prestige, his company—everything he had valued above his own wife and children—had been stripped away from him in a matter of days.

"You have until five o'clock to clear out your executive office, Daniel," Claire said, standing up. "Please leave your corporate keycard and laptop with my assistant."
As Claire walked out of the boardroom, Victoria by her side, she felt a profound sense of liberation. She wasn't just surviving the divorce; she was reclaiming the identity she had voluntarily suppressed for the sake of a man who never deserved her sacrifice.
