Chapter 7 - The Reality Check

While the Bennett household thrived, Daniel Bennett’s life was rapidly unraveling in his luxury rental penthouse.
The initial excitement of his affair with Madison Cole had been entirely fueled by secrecy, luxury vacations, and the thrill of the forbidden. Now that they were forced into a mundane, high-stress reality, the cracks in their relationship were turning into canyons.
Madison sat on the white leather sofa, surrounded by shopping bags, her face twisted in a pout. "Daniel, my credit card was declined at Saks today! This is humiliating! You said the asset freeze was temporary!"
Daniel, who was pouring himself a glass of whiskey at two in the afternoon, glared at her. "The asset freeze is tied to the divorce proceedings, Madison. I am living on a restricted personal allowance until the settlement is finalized. You need to stop spending money like we are still on the corporate account."
"Well, it's not my fault you got kicked out of your own company!" Madison yelled, her voice losing its sweet, breathless quality. "You told me you were invincible! You told me your wife was a nobody who wouldn't fight back! Now I’ve been fired, my reputation in Chicago is ruined, and I'm stuck in this apartment while she lives in that massive house!"
Daniel slammed his glass down on the counter. "You think I wanted this? I gave you everything! I gave you a half-million-dollar condo in Miami, and now Claire's lawyers are suing to claw it back as a fraudulent transfer! You might lose that condo, Madison!"
"If I lose that condo, I'm leaving!" Madison shrieked. "I didn't sign up to be the broke girlfriend of a disgraced ex-CEO!"
The words hung in the air, ugly and transparent. Daniel looked at her, truly looked at her, and realized the immense mistake he had made. He had traded twenty years of loyalty, intelligence, and genuine companionship for a woman who only valued him for his corporate title and his checkbook. He remembered Claire nursing their twins at three in the morning while editing his messy business plans, never complaining, always believing in him when he had nothing.
"Get out," Daniel said quietly.
"What?" Madison blinked, surprised.
"Get out of my apartment," Daniel repeated, his voice devoid of emotion. "We are done, Madison. Pack your things and leave."
Madison realized she had pushed him too far. She tried to soften her tone, stepping toward him. "Daniel, honey, I was just stressed..."
"No," Daniel said, stepping back, avoiding her touch. "You said it yourself—you didn't sign up for this. I have nothing left to offer you. Leave."

By the end of the day, Madison was gone, taking her designer bags and leaving Daniel alone in the echoing, sterile penthouse. He sat in the dark, staring at his phone, realizing he had isolated himself from everyone who had ever truly loved him. He had thought he was the ultimate chess player, but he had managed to checkmate himself.
The next morning, Daniel called his lead attorney, Henderson. "Call Victoria Vance. Tell her I agree to all of Claire's terms. No modifications. No counters. Just draw up the papers, and I will sign them."
