Chapter 4 - The Legal Escalation

Three days later, Claire sat in the high-rise downtown office of Sarah Lin, one of Seattle’s most formidable family law attorneys.

On the glass conference table lay a fifty-page court petition filed by Daniel’s high-priced legal team: "MOTION FOR EMERGENCY REVISION OF RESIDENTIAL TIME AND SOLE DECISION-MAKING AUTHORITY."

"It’s a classic corporate play, Claire," Sarah Lin explained, leaning back in her leather executive chair and tapping her pen against the filing. "Daniel’s PR consultants have told him that the only way to salvage his reputation and regain his position as CEO is to present himself as a devoted, hands-on father who was 'unfairly alienated' by an uncooperative ex-wife."

"Alienated?" Claire let out a incredulous laugh. "He missed Ethan’s last two birthdays because he was at tech conferences in Munich and Singapore!"

"The court doesn't look at feelings; it looks at evidence," Sarah pointed out gently. "Daniel’s filing includes affidavits from his assistant claiming he sent luxury gifts, funded Ethan’s private preschool trust, and made multiple attempts to schedule weekend visits that you supposedly declined."

"I declined weekend visits when he tried to delegate Ethan to hired nannies while he went on golfing trips!" Claire argued, her hands clenching into fists on her lap. "He doesn't want Ethan because he loves him, Sarah. He wants him because Ethan is the key to his redemption narrative!"

"I know that," Sarah said softly, her eyes filled with warm determination. "And we are going to prove it to the judge. But Daniel has unlimited financial resources. He’s hired a private investigative firm to audit your life, your employment records, and your apartment safety."

Claire froze. "He’s investigating me?"

"Standard legal intimidation," Sarah said calmly. "They want to find any small flaw—a late bill payment, a busy work schedule, a missing health checkup—to claim your environment is 'unstable' compared to his grand penthouse."

Claire stood up from her chair, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Puget Sound. She saw the ferry boats cutting through the grey water, the space needle rising into the cloudy sky.

Six years ago, she had walked away from Daniel’s money because she refused to let her soul be bought. Now, he was trying to buy her son’s future.

"What do we do first?" Claire asked, turning around with an unshakeable fire in her eyes.

"We file a counter-petition for permanent child support modification and mandatory parental evaluation," Sarah answered sharply. "And we subpoena his former bride, Madeline, as a primary character witness."
