Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Image

The battle for Ethan was no longer happening behind closed doors; it was unfolding in the rigid halls of the King County Superior Court.

Two weeks into the legal discovery phase, Sarah Lin received a surprise phone call from an unexpected ally: Madeline’s legal representative.

That afternoon, Claire met Madeline at a quiet, secluded tea house in the Fremont neighborhood.

Madeline looked entirely different from the polished bride at the hotel. She wore simple jeans, a warm beige cardigan, and no diamond jewelry. She looked exhausted, but her eyes were clear and grounded.

"I signed the annulment papers yesterday," Madeline said, setting her teacup down on the wooden table. "Daniel’s legal team offered me a substantial financial settlement to sign a non-disclosure agreement regarding his personal life."

Claire leaned forward. "Did you sign it?"

"No," Madeline said firmly, looking straight into Claire’s eyes. "I tore it up in front of his attorney."

Madeline reached into her handbag and pulled out a small silver USB flash drive, setting it gently between them.

"What is this?" Claire asked.

"During the three months leading up to the wedding, Daniel had his corporate assistant record all of his personal phone calls and dictations to write a ghostwritten memoir about his life as a 'tech visionary'," Madeline explained. "After the wedding disaster, he tried to delete the audio archives from his home server. But his assistant—a young woman named Hannah whom he treated terribly—saved a backup copy before he fired her."

Claire touched the cold metal of the drive. "What’s on it?"

"Audio recordings of Daniel talking to his PR team three weeks before the wedding," Madeline revealed, her voice dropping into a disgusted whisper. "He specifically planned to seating you at Table Nineteen. He wanted to use the wedding toast to paint you as a bitter ex-wife who failed to support his vision, while positioning himself as a benevolent father who 'rescued' his son from a humble life."

Claire stared at the drive, a chill running down her spine. The depth of Daniel’s calculation was terrifying.

"Why are you giving this to me, Madeline?" Claire asked softly.

Madeline reached across the table and placed her hand over Claire’s.

"Because when I stood on those stage steps in my wedding dress and saw your son speak," Madeline whispered, tears shimmering in her eyes, "I realized that little boy was the only person in that entire room who was telling the truth. Daniel tried to break you six years ago, Claire. I won't let him break Ethan."
