Chapter 2 - The Contract in the Vault

The morning sun broke through the grey storm clouds, casting a harsh, pale light across the eighty-fourth floor of the Langum Tower in downtown Manhattan.

I sat on the plush leather sofa inside Richard’s private office, wrapped in an oversized cashmere sweater he had forced me to wear after I spent the night shivering in my penthouse. I hadn't slept a single minute. My eyes were swollen, my heart felt hollowed out, and my phone had been ringing continuously with frantic calls from Tristan and his father. I had turned it off hours ago.

Richard stood behind his massive mahogany desk, reviewing a series of legal documents with his chief legal counsel, a sharp-faced woman named Victoria Vance.

"The papers are ready, Mr. Langum," Victoria said, setting a thick leather-bound folder onto the desk. She cast a fleeting, curious glance in my direction before returning her attention to her boss. "If Miss Sterling signs, the arrangement takes full legal effect immediately."

Richard picked up a sleek black fountain pen, turning his head to look at me. "Leave us, Victoria."

Victoria bowed her head slightly and quietly exited the grand office, clicking the heavy double doors shut behind her.

Richard walked out from behind his desk, holding the leather folder in his hand. He sat down on the leather coffee table directly in front of me, leaning forward so his face was level with mine. The proximity was overwhelming. Up close, I could see the faint silver threads at his temples, the sharp line of his jawline, and the absolute authority radiating from every line of his face.

"Drink your tea, Daphne," he said softly, gesturing to the steaming porcelain cup on the table.

"I don't want tea, Richard," I whispered, my voice hoarse. "I want to know what's going on. Tristan’s father was screaming on my voicemail this morning. He said you bought up their family’s debt and are threatening to foreclose on their home."

"Tristan insulted you," Richard replied simply, as if explaining why the sun rose in the east. "He took advantage of your trust, humiliated you on your birthday, and attempted to use your father's legacy for his own financial gain. His family's destruction is a logical consequence."

"You can't just ruin people's lives because they hurt my feelings!" I protested, though a small, pathetic part of me felt a sick sense of relief that someone was finally protecting me.

"I can," Richard said smoothly. "Because you belong to my sphere of protection. And because of this."

He opened the leather folder, laying two thick parchment documents across my knees.

I looked down. At the top of the page, written in bold, gold-embossed typography, were the words: IRREVOCABLE MATRIMONIAL AGREEMENT AND TRUST DEED.

My eyes scanned the text rapidly, my pulse spiking with every line: ...Between Arthur Sterling (Grantor) and Richard Langum (Grantee)... in the event of Arthur Sterling's passing, full guardianship and control of the Sterling Estate, including the hand of Daphne Sterling, shall be transferred to Richard Langum upon her twenty-fourth birthday...

My breath hitched. Attached to the back of the document was a handwritten letter in dark blue ink.

I recognized that handwriting instantly. It was my father's.

Daphne, my darling girl, the letter read. If you are reading this, I am gone, and you have turned twenty-four. The world is full of wolves, my child, men who will see your inheritance and your gentle heart as prey. I have made many mistakes in my life, but my greatest decision was entrusting your future to Richard. He is the only man strong enough to shield you, powerful enough to protect you, and devoted enough to put your life above his own. Marry him, Daphne. Trust him.

Tears blurred my vision, dripping onto the parchment, smudging my father's ink.

"My father... signed this?" I gasped, looking up at Richard in absolute disbelief. "Five years ago? Before he died?"

"Your father knew he was dying of cancer long before he told you," Richard explained gently, his hand reaching out to cover mine. His touch was warm, grounding, and steady. "He knew the Sterling family name would attract vultures like Tristan Vance. He made me swear on his deathbed that I would step in when you turned twenty-four and make you my wife."

"Why twenty-four?" I asked, my head spinning. "Why wait until yesterday?"

May you like

Richard’s eyes flickered with a sudden, intense heat that made my heart leap against my ribs.

"Because he wanted you to have a chance to grow up," Richard said softly, his thumb tracing the knuckles of my hand. "And because I promised him I wouldn't touch you until you were old enough to understand what it means to be mine."
