Chapter 6 - Ashes and Absolution

The heavy wooden doors of the guesthouse study flexed outward with a loud CRACK as Vance used a hydraulic battering ram to clear the lock.

Inside, Victoria Vance stood near a stone fireplace, holding a silver lighter in one hand and the thick parchment of my father's original trust deed in the other. Her hair was disheveled, her expensive suit crumpled, and her eyes wild with a mixture of terror and corporate greed.

"Stay back!" Victoria screamed, raising the lighter toward the corner of the document. "One flick of this thumb, Richard, and Arthur Sterling's final wishes go up in smoke! Without this deed, you have no legal claim to Daphne's estate or her hand!"

Richard stepped into the room calmly, placing his hands into his suit pockets. I stood right beside him, holding his arm tightly.

"Do you really think a piece of paper gives me power, Victoria?" Richard asked, his deep voice smooth and devoid of stress. "You've worked for me for eight years. Have you learned nothing?"

Victoria’s hand trembled. "Julian has three high-court judges on retainer! If this document dies tonight, the court will appoint an independent receiver tomorrow morning! The Sterling billions will be frozen for decades in litigation!"

"Julian Vance was arrested twenty minutes ago at the Plaza Hotel," Richard announced flatly.

Victoria gasped, her face draining of color. "What... what are you talking about?"

"Vance Financial was raided by the SEC at midnight," Richard continued, taking a slow, deliberate step toward her. "I leaked their offshore tax fraud ledgers to the Department of Justice three hours ago. Julian is facing federal wire fraud and treason charges. Tristan is currently being held in a federal holding cell for corporate conspiracy."

Victoria’s eyes widened in horror. "No... no, that's impossible! Julian said—"

"Julian lied to you," I interjected, stepping forward from behind Richard, my voice strong and clear. "Just like Tristan lied to me. You ruined your career and your life for a family that used you as a distraction."

Victoria looked at the parchment in her hand, then at the roaring fire in the stone hearth behind her. Realizing her leverage was completely gone, tears of rage spilled down her cheeks.

"You took everything from us!" Victoria shrieked, flicking the lighter open. "If we get nothing, you get nothing!"

She thrust the parchment into the open flame.

"No!" I cried out.

Before the flames could consume the parchment, Richard moved with terrifying speed.

He closed the distance across the room, his iron hand clamping around Victoria's wrist with enough force to shatter the lighter against the stone floor. With his other hand, he snatched the burning document, extinguishing the tiny flickering flame against his bare leather glove before it could damage the heavy gold seal.

Victoria collapsed onto her knees, sobbing hysterically as Vance and two federal officers moved in, snapping steel handcuffs around her wrists.

Richard stood over her, his breathing completely even. He looked down at the parchment in his hand—the original deed containing my father's handwriting—completely intact.

He turned to look at me, holding out the document.

"It's safe, Daphne," Richard said softly.

I looked at the document, then up into Richard’s eyes. A sudden wave of emotion washed over me—the fear, the betrayal, the grief for my father, and the overwhelming realization that this powerful man had risked everything to guard my life.

I didn't take the document.

Instead, I stepped forward, wrapped my arms around Richard’s neck, and buried my face into his chest, weeping quietly against his lapel.

Richard’s arms wrapped securely around my waist, lifting me slightly off my feet, pulling me against him in an embrace so fierce and protective that the entire world outside ceased to exist.

"I’ve got you, my sweet," Richard whispered into my hair, his dark voice filled with a deep, reverent tenderness. "I've got you."
