Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Coup

The main auditorium of Davenport Enterprises was packed with sixty-two board members, representing the largest pension funds, sovereign wealth portfolios, and investment banks in the world. The air was thick with the scent of expensive coffee and panic.

At the front of the stage, a massive digital projection showed the company’s stock price, which had continued its downward trend, losing seven billion dollars in paper value since the previous night's raid.

Standing at the podium was Alistair Croft, the lead independent director and a close ally of the Sterling family. He was reading from a leather-bound corporate manifesto.

"Lucas Davenport’s recent actions constitute a material breach of his fiduciary duties," Croft declared, his voice echoing through the state-of-the-art sound system. "He has engaged in unauthorized private security operations, exposed the corporation to catastrophic legal liabilities from Apex Global, and demonstrated an emotional instability that threatens our upcoming Euro-Pacific merger. As the board of directors, we must act to protect our shareholders. I call for an immediate vote to remove Lucas Davenport as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board."

"The vote is out of order, Alistair," a calm, resonant voice sounded from the back of the auditorium.

The double doors swung open, and Lucas walked down the center aisle. He wasn't wearing his usual armor of a three-piece suit; he was in a simple black blazer, his hands relaxed at his sides. Behind him walked Julian Vance, who was no longer looking panicked—he was carrying a metal briefcase with a secure digital lock.

Croft sneered, leaning against the podium. "Lucas, you don't have the floor. The bylaws state that during an extraordinary removal session, the target executive must remain silent until the votes are cast."

"I own forty-two percent of the voting shares in this room, Alistair," Lucas said as he reached the stage, stepping up onto the platform until he stood directly beside the director. "And thirty minutes ago, my financial teams bought out the secondary debt portfolios of your own investment firm. If you take this vote, I will liquidate your firm's commercial paper before noon, forcing you into technical insolvency by three o'clock."

A gasp rippled through the audience of international bankers.

"You're threatening us?" Croft whispered, his face turning red. "You can't intimidate the entire financial establishment, Lucas! The public wants answers! The press is outside! They know you're using this company to fight a private war for the Wards!"

"I’m not fighting a private war, Alistair. I’m correcting a crooked ledger," Lucas turned to face the entire board room, his voice rising in power until it filled every corner of the grand hall. "For fifteen years, this company has generated twenty percent annual returns by looking away from the supply chains. We bought Apex Global's logistics because they were cheap. We ignored how they kept their costs low. We ignored the factory doors locked from the outside. We ignored the children begging for scraps outside our five-star restaurants."

He pointed a finger toward the massive screen behind him. Julian tapped the metal briefcase, and the display instantly shifted from stock tickers to a live video feed from the Canal Street Industrial Laundry.

The screen showed federal marshals and Department of Justice agents clearing out the building, placing Griggs and five other Apex executives in handcuffs. Below the video, a scrolling ticker showed that the Department of Justice had just launched a comprehensive federal investigation into Apex Global for human trafficking and racketeering.

"The Euro-Pacific merger isn't dead," Lucas told the silent board members. "It’s been restructured. The French cartel didn't want Victor Sterling's corrupted assets anyway. They wanted clean logistics. By exposing Apex Global, we have eliminated our primary competitor and cleared the regulatory path for a monopoly on sustainable, certified infrastructure. The stock market will realize this within twenty-four hours. Your investments are safe. But your old ways of doing business are over."

Alistair Croft stared at the federal investigation alerts on the screen, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. He slowly stepped away from the podium, his power broken in a single afternoon.
