Chapter 7 - The Trap in the Shadows

The legal victory at the boardroom was total, but Lucas knew that a wounded beast like Victor Sterling was at his most dangerous when backed into a corner. By Friday evening, Apex Global’s stock had collapsed by forty percent, and the federal courts had frozen all of Sterling’s personal and corporate bank accounts.

At 9:00 PM, Lucas was driving his own vehicle—a classic, unarmored black sedan—through the rain-slicked streets of the city. He had left Marcus and the security teams at the penthouse to guard Elena and Lila. He needed to clear his head, to feel the wheel in his hands, to remember who he was before the towers took over.

As he crossed the old iron bridge connecting the commercial center to the Wards, a heavy, unmarked delivery truck suddenly pulled out from a side street, ramming into the rear quarter panel of his sedan.

The impact was violent, sending Lucas's car spinning across the wet asphalt until it crashed into the rusted metal girders of the bridge. The airbags deployed with a deafening bang, filling the cabin with white smoke and the sharp smell of gunpowder.

Lucas groaned, his forehead bleeding where it had hit the side window. He tried to open the driver’s side door, but the metal frame was crushed shut.

Through the cracked windshield, he saw three figures step out of the delivery truck. They were wearing dark raincoats and ballistic masks, holding heavy iron crowbars and silenced automatic pistols. Leading them was Victor Sterling himself, his silver hair soaked by the rain, his eyes wild with the desperation of a ruined man.

"Get him out of the car!" Sterling screamed over the sound of the rain.

One of the masked men smashed the passenger side window with a crowbar, reaching inside to unlock the door. They dragged Lucas out onto the wet, cold metal deck of the bridge, throwing him down onto his hands and knees in the pooling water.

Sterling stepped forward, kicking Lucas hard in the ribs, sending him rolling onto his back. He pulled a silver-plated revolver from his coat pocket, pointing it directly between Lucas’s eyes.

"You destroyed my family's legacy in twelve hours, you arrogant son of a bitch!" Sterling shrieked, his voice cracking with madness. "Five generations of wealth, gone! The feds are at my house! My wife left for London! I have nothing left because you wanted to play savior for a dirty little brat from the gutters!"

Lucas didn't flinch. He spat a mouthful of blood onto the wet iron, looking up at the barrel of the gun with the calm, unwavering focus of a man who had faced death long before he found money.

"You never had anything, Victor," Lucas said, his voice steady despite the pain in his chest. "You just had a bigger cage than the rest of us."

"Say goodbye to your empire, Davenport," Sterling hissed, his finger tightening on the trigger.

A sharp, high-pitched whistle cut through the sound of the storm, followed by the deafening roar of a modified V8 engine. A massive, blacked-out security SUV tore onto the bridge from the opposite direction, ignoring the warning signs, crashing directly into the delivery truck with a shower of sparks and twisting metal.
