Chapter 9 - The Proposal under the Cottonwood

Two weeks later, winter was approaching, painting the tops of the distant mountains with snow.
David asked Sophie to walk with him down to the ancient cottonwood tree at the edge of the creek pasture—the spot where the ranch’s land met the open prairie.
The sun was setting, casting long, violet shadows across the frost-kissed grass.
David stopped under the massive canopy of the tree. He turned to face her, taking both of her hands in his.
"Sophie," he began, his voice deeper and more emotional than she had ever heard it before. "Four months ago, I found you crying on a gravel patch behind a church. I offered you a ride because I couldn't bear to see a good woman destroyed by a liar."
Sophie looked up into his slate-gray eyes, her heart beating fast.
"I thought I was just bringing a guest to my house," David continued, his fingers tightening gently around hers. "I thought my heart had died two years ago with Sarah, and that my only job left in this world was to raise my seven kids and work this dirt."
He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, simple velvet box.
"I was wrong," David whispered. "You didn't just step into my truck that day, Sophie. You stepped into our lives and brought the spring back to this ranch. You healed my children. You healed me."
He opened the box. Inside sat a vintage gold ring featuring a sparkling, oval-cut blue sapphire surrounded by tiny diamonds.
"This was my grandmother’s ring," David said, his voice trembling slightly with raw emotion. "It was given to a woman who built a life out of love, hard work, and loyalty. I'm not offering you a fancy life, Sophie. There will still be mud on the porch, bills on the fridge, and loud mornings. But I promise you this—I will love you, honor you, and protect you every single day of my life. You will never be alone, and you will never be spoken to with anything less than absolute respect."
He looked into her eyes, his heart on his sleeve. "Sophie... will you marry me? Will you be my wife, and officially be a mother to our seven kids?"
Tears of pure, overwhelming joy spilled over Sophie’s eyelashes, shining like diamonds in the twilight.
She didn't hesitate for a single second.
"Yes!" she cried out, throwing her arms around his neck. "Yes, David! A thousand times, yes!"

David lifted her off her feet, spinning her around under the ancient cottonwood tree, his rich, triumphant laughter echoing across the silent pasture.
When he set her down, he slid the sapphire ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly—a symbol of a love that was real, tested, and true.
