Chapter 3 - The Venom in the Veins

For the next two hours, while the rest of the 15,000-square-foot estate slept under the watchful eyes of armed guards and security cameras, three people sat in the dim light of the medical suite, uncovering a nightmare.

Ethan’s messages were slow, painstaking, and horrifying.

Letter by letter, guided by Claire’s patient finger tracing the board, Ethan revealed the truth.

He wasn't failing to recover because of his brain injury. He was being actively poisoned.

Every night at 1:00 AM, after the primary nursing shift rotated, Dr. Harrison—the world-renowned neuro-specialist Roman paid fifty thousand dollars a month—administered a custom "neurological sedative" under the guise of preventing seizures.

In reality, the drug was a synthetic paralytic compound derived from a rare neuromuscular toxin. It kept Ethan’s motor function suppressed, trapped his vocal cords, and induced pseudo-coma symptoms that mimicked irreversible brain damage.

And the person paying Dr. Harrison wasn't just Grant Mercer.

It was Victor Vance. Roman’s second-in-command. The man who stood at Roman’s right hand at every meeting, who managed the family’s logistics, and who had sat beside Roman at the hospital crying the night Ethan was shot.

“Victor…” Roman whispered, the name tasting like ash in his mouth.

Ethan blinked twice when Claire pointed to the letter M—he spelled out: M. E. R. C. E. R. P. A. Y. S. V. I. C. T. O. R.

Victor was feeding Mercer information on Roman’s corporate moves, slowing down Hale Holdings' expansion, and keeping Ethan paralyzed so that Roman would remain distracted, emotionally drained, and vulnerable.

Roman stood up slowly. His eyes were devoid of light, two black pools of absolute frost.

Claire looked at Roman, feeling a shudder run down her spine. She had seen powerful men before, but the cold, calculating aura surrounding Roman Hale in that moment was unlike anything she had ever encountered. It was the aura of a man preparing to burn a kingdom to the ground.

“Mr. Hale…” Claire whispered, stepping toward him carefully. “What are you going to do?”

Roman turned his gaze to her. He looked at this woman—a housekeeper hired three months ago through a third-party service, a woman the high-society world dismissed because of her humble background and her full figure—who had accomplished what twenty elite doctors couldn't. She had saved his brother’s mind.

“What is your full name, Claire?” Roman asked quietly.

“Claire Elizabeth Dawson.”

“Do you have family in Chicago, Claire?”

“Just my sister and her young son in Evanston,” she replied, frowning slightly.

Roman pulled a heavy gold signet ring from his pinky finger—the ring that bore the Hale family crest—and placed it gently in her hand, closing her fingers over it.

“Starting tonight, Claire, you aren't a housekeeper,” Roman said, his voice deadly steady. “You are the highest-paid personal assistant in my organization. You answer only to me. And if anyone in this house tries to give you an order, touch you, or stop you from seeing Ethan, you show them this ring.”

Claire stared at the heavy gold ring resting in her palm. “Mr. Hale, I don't want your money. I just want Ethan to be safe.”

“I know,” Roman said, touching her shoulder with a brief, profound gesture of gratitude. “That’s why you’re the only person in this city I trust.”
