Chapter 8 - THE FORTRESS AT BLACKWOOD

The rain had turned into a fierce coastal gale by the time the armored convoy arrived at the Blackwood Facility—a private, heavily fortified military compound hidden deep in the dense pine forests forty miles north of the city.

This was not a legal prison. It was the Vale Syndicate’s private containment installation, built by Victor Vale decades ago to hold high-value threats that the public court system was too slow or corrupt to handle.

Inside the central concrete holding cell, Julian Vance sat at a metal table, his hands handcuffed to an iron ring embedded in the floor.

He had been transferred from the state penitentiary two hours ago under a top-secret executive order authorized by Special Agent Miller and signed off by federal intelligence officials who had long wanted Vance removed from the public grid.

The heavy steel door of the cell hissed open.

Roman Vale walked in, flanked by Arthur. Roman had removed his tuxedo jacket, wearing only a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the powerful cords of muscle beneath.

Behind Roman walked Sadie. She had changed into comfortable dark trousers and a black wool sweater, her face composed and resolute.

Vance lifted his head, his face bruised from his rough transfer. He looked at Sadie, then at Roman, attempting to muster a sneer.

“A private prison, Roman?” Vance rasped, his voice echoing off the bare concrete walls. “You think keeping me in a hole is going to stop my network? My offshore accounts release funding automatically every seventy-two hours unless I enter a personal biometric code.”

Roman pulled out a metal chair, reversed it, and sat down opposite Vance.

“Your biometric code was extracted twenty minutes ago from your private medical files at the hospital,” Roman said calmly. “Gideon has already seized every offshore server in Panama and Switzerland. The Vanguard Group no longer has a single dollar in any bank on earth.”

Vance’s face twitched. “You’re bluffing.”

“I do not bluff, Julian,” Roman said. “You sent three mercenaries to my wife’s gallery tonight. You thought you could use her as a bargaining chip.”

Vance glared at Sadie, his teeth grinding together. “She’s the daughter of a weak engineer! She belongs in the dirt with her father!”

Sadie walked slowly around the table, stopping right beside Vance’s chair. She looked down at the bitter, defeated old man.

“My father died fifteen years ago, Vance,” Sadie said softly. “And for fifteen years, you thought you destroyed his legacy. But look at what his legacy built.”

Sadie gestured to herself and Roman.

“His daughter is free, happy, and loved,” Sadie continued, her voice filled with a powerful, quiet dignity. “His name is restored in every historical record in the country. And the man who tried to destroy him is going to spend the rest of his life in a windowless room, sitting alone with his own failure.”

Vance’s breath caught in his throat. He looked at Sadie’s clear, calm eyes and realized the absolute truth of her words. He hadn't destroyed the Reed family. He had only delayed their triumph.

Roman stood up, smoothing his white shirt.

“You will never see the sun again, Julian,” Roman said flatly. “You will never speak to another human being outside these four walls. This is where your story ends.”

Roman took Sadie’s hand in his. They turned their backs on Julian Vance and walked toward the heavy steel door.

“NO!” Vance screamed, thrashing against his iron handcuffs, the metal clanking violently against the floor. “ROMAN! LOOK AT ME! YOU CAN’T LEAVE ME HERE! SADIE! SADIE!”

The heavy steel door hissed shut, swallowing Vance’s frantic screams into total, absolute silence.

Outside in the brightly lit corridor, Silas stood waiting with two hot mugs of coffee.

“Sir,” Silas said respectfully. “Special Agent Miller has confirmed that the remaining mercenary cells in the city have been arrested by federal SWAT teams. The Vanguard network is completely extinct.”

Roman took one of the mugs and handed it to Sadie, wrapping his other arm securely around her waist.

“Thank you, Silas,” Roman said. “Prepare the helicopter. We are going home.”
