Chapter 2 - The Sixty-Minute Lie

When the paramedics finally arrived at the Maddox penthouse forty minutes later, Cole stood near the floor-to-ceiling windows, holding a glass of scotch.

His hair was slightly ruffled on purpose. His coat was off, his shirt sleeves rolled up, creating the picture of a frantic, panicked husband who had just walked into a nightmare.

Beside him stood Arthur Vance, chief legal counsel for Maddox Pharmaceuticals—a man whose career was built on burying corporate murder under non-disclosure agreements.

"Remember the narrative, Cole," Vance whispered as the elevator chimes echoed through the foyer. "You came home from the dinner. You found the lights off. She slipped on the wet marble near the island. You didn't hear her because you were on a call with European investors. You tried to perform CPR yourself before calling 911."

"I know what to say, Arthur," Cole said smoothly, taking a sip of scotch and setting the glass down. "Where is the phone?"

"Deep under the island cabinetry," Vance murmured. "My assistant will retrieve it while the EMTs are distracted. It will be wiped and destroyed before sunrise."

The elevator doors slid open, and four paramedics rushed into the penthouse, pushing a gurney, followed by two uniformed NYPD officers.

"Where is she?" the lead paramedic shouted.

Cole pointed toward the kitchen, his voice cracking with rehearsed emotion. "In there! My God, please help her! She’s twenty-six weeks pregnant! I came home and found her... she must have fallen..."

The paramedics rounded the corner and gasped.

Marissa was barely conscious, her face deathly pale, her lip split, her uniform sweater soaked through with blood.

"Vitals are plummeting!" the female paramedic yelled, dropping to her knees. "BP ninety over forty! Fetal heart rate is dangerously weak! We need an immediate trauma bay! Call in a Code Crimson to Mount Sinai!"

"No," Vance stepped forward, pulling a heavy silver card from his pocket. "Take her to Saint Jude’s Private Medical Center. Mr. Maddox is the primary benefactor. Their chief of surgery is on standby."

"Sir, she won't survive the drive to Saint Jude’s!" the paramedic snapped, placing an oxygen mask over Marissa's face. "Mount Sinai is four blocks away!"

"Saint Jude’s," Cole commanded, stepping forward with his hands raised in authority. "I am her husband. I have medical power of attorney. You will take her to—"

BOOM.

The heavy reinforced glass of the penthouse's private balcony exploded inward in a shower of brilliant, glittering shards.

Wind and freezing rain screamed into the living room, knocking over floor lamps and sending loose papers flying through the air. Before Cole or the officers could react, four black-clad tactical operators dropped from ropes attached to an unmarked stealth helicopter hovering in the storm above.

Cole scrambled backward, falling against the couch. "What the hell—!"

Before the NYPD officers could draw their sidearms, the tactical team moved with terrifying speed, disarming the officers and pinning them against the marble pillar in seconds.

Then, from the private elevator, which had been manually overridden, stepped two men.

Elias Lane walked in first, his FBI windbreaker gleaming in the dim light, his weapon drawn and locked onto Cole’s chest. Behind him stepped Julian Lane, dripping with rain, his tactical gloves tight around a carbon-fiber baton.

Cole’s eyes widened in recognition, terror replacing his calculated composure. "Elias? Julian? What is this insanity? This is my home!"

Julian didn't say a word. He walked straight past Cole, kneeling beside the paramedics who were trembling against the floor.

Julian gently pushed his fingers against Marissa’s cold neck, checking her faint pulse. He looked into her bruised face, his heart breaking into a thousand pieces as she feebly reached out, her tiny fingers catching his tactical sleeve.

"Jules..." she breathed through the oxygen mask. "Save... my baby..."

"I've got you, Rissa," Julian whispered, his voice cracking with raw emotion as he kissed her blood-stained forehead. "The nightmare is over. I'm here."

He looked up at the head paramedic. "My bird is on the roof. Trauma team is waiting at Columbia Presbyterian. Move her now. Anyone who tries to stop you dies."

The paramedics didn't argue. They lifted Marissa onto the gurney and sprinted toward the elevator under the escort of two of Julian’s men.

As the elevator doors closed, leaving only Cole, Vance, Elias, and Julian in the ruined penthouse, the room became deathly quiet.

Cole pushed himself up, trying to smooth his suit jacket. "Elias, thank God you’re here. Your brother has lost his mind. He breached my home! I was just trying to get Marissa to Saint Jude’s—"

CLACK.

Elias pulled a tablet from his coat and hit play.

The voice of Cole Maddox echoed through the room with terrifying clarity, bouncing off the ruined walls:

“You think pregnancy gives you power over me?” “Cole, please... my baby...” “You are not leaving this room.” (The wet impact of bone hitting marble, followed by a harrowing scream.)

Cole’s breath hitched in his throat. His lawyer, Vance, turned completely pale, taking two steps back from his client.

"You... you recorded me?" Cole stammered, his hands shaking. "That... that’s illegal! It’s inadmissible in court! It was obtained without a warrant!"

Elias walked slowly up to Cole, stopping inches from his face. The FBI badge pinned to his belt seemed to gleam in the cold rain blowing through the broken window.

"That wasn't for a court, Cole," Elias whispered, his dark eyes filled with absolute venom. "That was for us."

Before Cole could react, Julian stepped forward. With one fluid, brutal movement, his carbon-fiber baton swung through the air, striking Cole squarely across the knees.

Cole let out a sickening scream as his leg buckled, dropping him heavily to his knees on the exact spot where his wife’s blood still stained the marble floor.

"You left her on the floor, Cole," Julian whispered, grabbing him by the hair and forcing him to look down at the dark crimson pool. "So that’s where you’re going to stay."
