Chapter 6 - The First Touch

The room on the ninth floor of Columbia Presbyterian was filled with the soft, rhythmic hum of heart monitors and the gentle scent of fresh white lilies that Julian had ordered to cover every table.

Marissa slowly opened her eyes.

The bright light blinded her for a moment, making her wince. Her head throbbed with a dull ache, and her abdominal muscles felt tight and sore, anchored by heavy surgical bandages beneath her hospital gown.

"Rissa?"

A warm, large hand gently cupped her fingers.

Marissa turned her head weakly. Sitting beside her bed was Julian. His dark eyes were tired, his clothes wrinkled, but he looked at her with such profound tenderness that tears immediately pooled in her eyes.

"Jules..." she rasped, her throat dry as sand. "Is... is she..."

"She’s alive, baby girl," Julian whispered, leaning down to press a soft kiss to her knuckles. "She’s right down the hall in the NICU. She’s small, but she’s a Lane. She’s fighting like hell."

Marissa let out a long, ragged sob, relief washing over her body like a warm wave. "Cole... he..."

"Cole is in a federal holding cell without bail," Elias’s voice came from the doorway.

Elias walked into the room, carrying a paper cup of warm tea. He set it on the table, pulled up a chair on the other side of her bed, and took her other hand.

"He lost everything, Rissa," Elias said gently. "The company, his money, his reputation, his freedom. He will spend the rest of his life behind bars. He will never, ever hurt you again."

Marissa looked at her two brothers—the men she had cut out of her life four years ago when Cole had manipulated her into believing they were cold, dangerous, and unworthy of her trust.

"I’m so sorry," Marissa sobbed, tears spilling over her pale cheeks. "I was so stupid... I let him isolate me from you... I didn't answer your calls..."

"Shh," Julian cut her off firmly, reaching up to gently wipe her tears away. "Don't you ever apologize for being manipulated by a monster, Marissa. You survived. You saved your baby. You sent us the recording that allowed us to tear him down. You are the bravest person I know."

"He made me feel so small," she whispered, her voice trembling. "For four years, he made me feel like I was nothing without him."

"You are a Lane," Elias said, his dark eyes fierce with pride. "You were born from iron, Marissa. You just forgot for a little while."

A nurse knocked gently on the open door, pushing a specialized mobile incubator into the room.

Inside lay the tiny baby girl, surrounded by warm light and soft blankets, her respiratory tube removed now that her small lungs were beginning to breathe on their own.

"Dr. Chen said she’s stable enough for ten minutes of skin-to-skin contact with her mother," the nurse smiled warmly.

Julian and Elias carefully helped Marissa push herself up into a sitting position, supporting her back with soft pillows.

The nurse gently lifted the tiny two-pound baby from the incubator, placing her down on Marissa’s bare chest, covering them both with a soft heated blanket.

The moment the baby felt her mother’s warmth and heard the familiar, rhythmic beat of her heart, her tiny hands uncurled. She let out a small, soft squeak and rested her head right against Marissa’s collarbone.

Marissa closed her eyes, holding her daughter close, weeping tears of pure, unfiltered joy.

"What are you going to name her, Rissa?" Julian asked softly, leaning over the bed, his finger resting near the baby's tiny toes.

Marissa looked down at her daughter, then up at her two brothers who had moved mountains to save her life.

May you like

"Hope," Marissa said, her voice clear and strong for the first time. "Hope Victoria Lane."

"Hope Lane," Elias repeated, a rare, radiant smile breaking across his face. "It’s perfect."
