Chapter 5 - The Velvet Trap

Saturday evening arrived with the crisp, electric energy of an elite Boston social season climax.

The Museum of Fine Arts was transformed into a glittering palace of white orchids, cascading crystal lighting, and black-tie elegance. Valet attendants in crisp uniforms parked lines of Bentleys and Rolls-Royces along Huntington Avenue, while paparazzi flashed cameras at arriving politicians, real estate moguls, and high-society patrons.

Inside the grand rotunda, a string quartet played softly beneath the neoclassical arches. Waiters circulated with flutes of vintage champagne and silver trays of caviar tartlets.

Grant Mercer stood near the VIP reception area, wearing a bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo, attempting to project the calm, unshakeable confidence of a titan of industry. But beneath his tailored lapel, his shirt collar felt like a tourniquet.

He hadn't been able to reach Claire. Her lawyers had returned every phone call with a polite, stone-walled refusal to negotiate until Monday morning.

Paige stood beside him in a backless emerald-silk gown that caught every flash of light in the room. She was glowing with self-importance, happily accepting congratulations from junior partners and trade magazine editors who assumed the upcoming merger made Grant the most powerful architect in the Northeast.

“Grant, darling, look, it’s the mayor,” Paige whispered, tugging gently on his sleeve. “And he’s heading right toward us.”

Mayor Harrison, a distinguished man with silver hair and an imposing presence, walked over with a polite smile, extending his hand. “Grant. Congratulations on the merger. I hear tonight is going to be a historic night for Mercer Atelier.”

Before Grant could force a welcoming smile, a sharp murmur rippled through the crowd near the grand staircase.

He looked up.

Every conversation in the massive rotunda died instantly. The string quartet sputtered and fell silent.

Descending the marble stairs was Claire Mercer.

She wore a backless, floor-length midnight-sapphire gown that seemed to capture the light of every crystal chandelier in the room. Her dark hair was swept up into an intricate chignon, secured by an antique diamond hairpin. Around her neck rested the emerald pendant—the very one Lily had ripped from Paige’s neck a week earlier.

But it wasn't her dress that drew every eye in the room.

It was the man walking beside her.

Michael Harrington—managing partner of Harrington, Thorne & Sterling, billionaire philanthropist, and one of the most feared corporate raiders in the United States. He offered Claire his arm with effortless, old-world grace, guiding her down the steps as if they were walking onto a royal stage.

Paige’s jaw dropped. Several local developers choked on their champagne.

Grant felt the blood rush out of his head, leaving his ears ringing with a high, deafening tone.

“What... what is he doing here?” Grant muttered, his knuckles turning white as he gripped his champagne flute so hard the crystal stem nearly snapped.

Claire and Michael didn't head toward the bar or the VIP lounge. They walked straight down the center aisle, directly toward the private dais where Grant, Paige, and the Sterling-Vane board members were standing.

The crowd parted before them in stunned silence.

Grant stepped forward, his face flushing a mottled, furious red. “Claire! What the hell do you think you’re playing at? Security!”

Before a security guard could twitch, Michael Harrington raised his left hand, flashing a small, laminated federal court document between his fingers.

“I wouldn't call security, Grant,” Michael said, his voice carrying effortlessly across the silent, cavernous rotunda. “Unless you want them to witness you violating a federal asset-seizure order on live television.”
