Chapter 9 - The House on the Hill

Six months later.
The morning sun rose over the rolling green hills of Estate Drive, casting golden light across a breathtaking two-story modern estate overlooking the ocean.
This was not the cold, formal palace of Alexander’s childhood. This was a home built with warm timber, sweeping glass windows, flower gardens, and open space where a child’s laughter could echo freely through the halls.
In the backyard, a custom wooden playground sat beneath a massive oak tree, equipped with swings, a slide, and a tiny playhouse.
Alexander stood on the back patio, wearing a comfortable cashmere sweater, holding a warm mug of coffee. He watched Sophia swinging on the swing set, her long light-brown hair flying in the breeze, her happy giggles drifting across the lawn.
The sliding glass door opened, and Lauren walked out onto the patio.
She wore a simple white summer dress. She looked healthy, radiant, her body fully recovered, her heart strong and beat steady. She wrapped her arms around Alexander's waist from behind, resting her cheek against his shoulder.
Alexander set his coffee cup down and turned in her arms, wrapping his hands around her waist, pulling her close against his chest.
"You look beautiful," he murmured, resting his forehead against hers.
"I was just looking at the calendar," Lauren smiled up at him, her pale green eyes shining with joy. "Do you know what today is?"
"How could I forget?" Alexander smiled back, pulling a small black velvet box from his pocket.
Lauren gasped softly.
Alexander dropped to one knee on the smooth stone patio, looking up at his wife with pure, unwavering devotion.
He opened the box, revealing a simple, breathtaking platinum band embedded with a row of sparkling emeralds—matching the color of her eyes.
"Lauren," Alexander said softly, his voice rich with emotion. "Three years ago, our vows were broken by lies. Today, in front of our daughter, under the open sky, I want to ask you again. Will you stay by my side, as my wife, my partner, and my best friend, for all the days of my life?"
Tears of pure happiness spilled down Lauren's cheeks.
"Yes," she wept happily, dropping to her knees beside him on the patio, wrapping her arms around his neck. "A thousand times yes, Alexander!"
Sophia ran over from the swing set, skipping across the grass, her small face lit up with a brilliant smile.

"Mommy! Daddy! Are we having a party?" she chirped, jumping into the middle of their hug.
Alexander laughed, picking up both of them in his arms, holding his entire world tight against his chest.
