Chapter 9 - The Golden Harvest

A year passed.

The rainy morning in the Whitmore dining room had turned into a distant memory, a scar that had healed into a badge of unyielding strength.

My firm had grown to employ six female auditors, two private investigators, and a dedicated legal advocacy team. We had recovered over forty million dollars for victims of financial abuse and corporate corruption across three states.

On a warm Saturday afternoon in May, my father’s old friend and my trusted attorney, Jonathan Miller, walked out onto the wraparound porch of my cottage, holding two glasses of sweet iced tea.

I sat in a wooden rocking chair, watching the sunset cast a brilliant golden glow over the green hills of Georgia.

“You’ve built quite an empire here, Eleanor,” Jonathan said with a warm smile, handing me my glass and sitting in the rocker beside me.

“It’s not an empire, Jonathan,” I smiled, taking a sip of the cold tea. “It’s a sanctuary. There’s a big difference.”

“The Governor’s office called today,” Jonathan noted, leaning back. “They want to award you the State Order of Merit for your work with the financial restitution task force.”

I laughed softly, looking out at the wild magnolias blooming near the edge of the woods.

“I don't need a medal, Jonathan,” I said softly. “The only reward I ever wanted was the freedom to sit on my own porch, drink my tea, and know that no man can ever threaten me in my own home again.”
