Chapter 8 - The Society Ghost

The peace of East Hampton was briefly interrupted in October when the legal fallout from the Cole family fraud reached its climax. Vanessa’s father and brother were handed multi-year sentences for corporate embezzlement, and the family name was thoroughly erased from the social registries of New York.
Vanessa herself, desperate to salvage some semblance of leverage, sent a series of threatening letters through her remaining legal counsel, demanding a multi-million dollar "settlement" for the emotional distress of the broken engagement.
Marcus didn't send an army of corporate attorneys this time. He handled it himself.
He met Vanessa one final time at a neutral legal office in Midtown Manhattan. She looked haggard, her designer clothes unable to hide the sharp, bitter lines of defeat on her face.
"You ruined my family, Marcus," she hissed across the conference table. "You dragged our name through the mud over a few thousand dollars and a stupid street kid."
May you like
Marcus signed a final cease-and-desist order and slid it across the glass table. "You ruined your own family the second you forgot that wealth isn't what's inside your bank account, Vanessa. It's what you protect when everything else falls away. If I see your name or your lawyers within a mile of my family again, I won't just freeze your accounts. I will buy the debt on every asset your mother still owns and evict her by Friday. We are done."
He stood up, walked out of the skyscraper, and didn't look back once as he caught the train back to the coast.
