Chapter 9 - The Declaration of the Hearth

By November, the salt air had turned crisp and cold, signaling the approach of winter. The beach house was warm, the fireplace crackling with cedar logs that filled the rooms with a rich, comforting scent.

It was Lily’s fourth birthday. There were no high-society photographers, no color-coordinated designer themes, and no grand guest lists of corporate associates. There was just a small chocolate cake with four brightly burning candles sitting on the wooden kitchen island, a mountain of hand-wrapped books, and a brand-new wooden playset Marcus had spent all morning assembling in the backyard with his own hands.

After Lily had blown out her candles and run off to the living room to show her stuffed fox his new toy house, Marcus walked over to where Clara was cleaning the cake platters.

He gently reached out, his hand covering hers, stopping her movements.

"Clara, stop," he said softly.

Clara looked up, her heart skipping a beat at the intensity in his eyes.

Marcus reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, simple velvet box. He didn't open it immediately. He just held it between them. "This isn't a corporate merger. There are no social expectations attached to this, and I don't care about what the registries say. Four years ago, you came into this house to take care of a structure. But over the last year, you taught me how to take care of a family."

He opened the box to reveal a stunning, vintage sapphire ring—the exact deep blue of the ocean outside their windows.

"I don't want an estate manager, Clara," Marcus said, his voice thick with a profound, unshakeable sincerity. "I want a partner. I want to wake up every morning knowing that the foundation beneath our feet is real. Will you marry us?"

Clara looked from the glittering blue stone to the man who had climbed out of his own golden fortress to stand beside her in the dirt. A beautiful, brilliant smile broke across her face.

"Yes, Marcus," she whispered, tears of joy bright in her eyes. "I will."

From the living room doorway, a small voice interrupted them. "Cece? Are you Uncle Marcus's favorite now?"

Marcus laughed, dropping to his knees as Lily came charging into the kitchen. He scooped her up in one arm and reached out with the other to pull Clara into his chest. "Yes, Lily. She's our absolute favorite. Always."
