Chapter 5 - "Are You My Father?"

The silence that descended upon the center of the ballroom was absolute. Even the string quartet slowed to a awkward stop, sensing the seismic shift in the room's atmosphere.
Claire stopped ten feet away from the Sterling family. She held Leo’s hand firmly, offering him a silent anchor of warmth, but her eyes were fixed entirely on Ethan.
Ethan looked at her, his lips trembling, unable to form a single word. His eyes shifted down to the boy standing beside her. When Ethan’s gray eyes met Leo’s gray eyes, the biological tether between them snapped into place with terrifying clarity.
"Claire..." Ethan managed to choke out, his voice a hoarse whisper.
Before Claire could speak, Grant Sterling drove his wheelchair forward, his face flushed with deep crimson rage.
"How dare you," Grant snarled, his voice carrying across the silent ballroom. "You were warned, girl. Security! Remove these people immediately!"
Two tall, muscular security officers in dark suits immediately stepped forward from the edges of the room.
"Touch her, and I will have you arrested for assault before you reach the front doors," Claire said. Her voice wasn't loud, but it carried an authority so cold and sharp that both security guards instinctively froze in their tracks.
Claire looked directly at Grant. "I was invited, Grant. And unlike nine years ago, I don't scare easily."
"This is an outrage!" Evelyn hissed, stepping up beside her husband. "You come here with some street child, trying to create a scandal on the biggest night of our company's history?"
"Street child?" Claire let out a quiet, dangerous laugh. "Look at him, Evelyn. Look at his eyes. Look at his face. Call him whatever you want, but you cannot rewrite genetics."
Caroline stepped forward, her eyes wild with malice. "This is a pathetic shakedown! Ethan, tell security to throw this gold-digger out! She’s trying to ruin our merger!"
Ethan didn't look at Caroline. He didn't look at his mother or father. He couldn't take his eyes off the boy.
Leo squeezed his mother's hand once, then gently let it go.
The nine-year-old boy took three calm, deliberate steps forward, stepping out from his mother’s shadow and standing directly in front of Ethan Sterling. The contrast between the tall, powerful billionaire in his tailored tuxedo and the small, defiant boy in his navy suit held three hundred people spellbound.
Leo looked up at Ethan. He took in the silver at Ethan’s temples, the anguish in his eyes, and the luxury surrounding him.
In a clear, confident voice that echoed off the high marble walls, Leo asked the question he had carried in his heart his entire life:
“Are you my father?”
The room seemed to lose all air.
Ethan felt as though he had been struck in the chest with a sledgehammer. Tears, hot and uncontrollable, welled in his eyes. The nine years of lies, the guilt, the corporate maneuvering, and his father’s suffocating control shattered into a million useless pieces in an instant.
Ethan dropped to his knees right there on the marble floor.

He ignored the gasps of the board members, ignored his father’s furious curses, and ignored Caroline’s sharp intake of breath. He dropped to his knees so he was at eye level with the young boy.
"Yes," Ethan whispered, his voice cracking with raw, unvarnished emotion. Tears spilled down his cheeks. "Yes, Leo. I am your father."
