Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

"Ethan, get up!" Grant bellowed, his voice hoarse with fury, slamming his hand onto the armrest of his wheelchair. "Get up off the floor this instant! You are making a fool of yourself in front of our investors!"
Ethan slowly stood up. But when he turned to face his father, the fear and compliance that had controlled him for thirty-five years were completely gone. In their place was a dangerous, icy rage.
"I have been a fool for nine years, Father," Ethan said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "But not tonight."
"Ethan!" Caroline grabbed his arm, her nails digging through his jacket sleeve. "Think about what you're doing! The Mercer family will pull out of the merger right now! You will ruin Sterling Hospitality!"
Ethan looked down at Caroline’s hand on his arm. Slowly, deliberately, he reached over and removed her fingers, stepping away from her as if she were a stranger.
"Then let it ruin," Ethan said coldly.
"You soft-headed coward!" Grant roared, his face darkening. "I built this empire! You will not tear it down for a secretary and her bastard!"
"Don't you dare speak to them like that!" Ethan shouted back, his voice booming through the cathedral-like space, shocking the room into utter stillness. "Nine years ago, I sat at your table and watched you destroy the only woman I ever loved. I let you intimidate her, I let you threaten her, and I convinced myself I was protecting her by letting her go!"
Ethan turned to Claire, his eyes filled with profound remorse.
"I was wrong, Claire," Ethan said, tears running down his face. "I was a coward. I thought if I stayed, I could fix things from the inside. I thought if I kept you away, you would be safe from him. But I left you alone to bear everything. I let my father dictate my life, and I lost the only thing that ever mattered."
Claire stood her ground, her expression unreadable, though a subtle quiver in her chin betrayed the storm inside her.
"It's too late for speeches, Ethan," Claire said softly. "We didn't come here for your apologies or your money."
"Then why are you here, Claire?" Evelyn demanded, stepping forward, her face twisted with arrogance. "If you don't want money, what could you possibly want from us?"
Claire pulled a sleek black USB drive from her evening clutch.
"I came for justice," Claire said.
The room stirred with fresh murmurings. Grant’s eyes widened slightly, a flash of genuine panic passing across his weathered face.
"What is that?" Grant growled.
"Nine years ago, when you fired me and tried to ruin my life," Claire explained, stepping closer to the stage where the press cameras were pointed, "you thought you had swept every corner clean. But I was your executive assistant, Grant. I managed your personal servers. I had access to the off-shore accounts you used to hide the illegally diverted funds during the 2017 European acquisitions."
A collective gasp swept through the board members.
"She's lying!" Caroline shrieked. "Security, take that drive from her!"
"Try it," Ethan snapped, stepping directly between the security guards and Claire, his body acting as a human shield. "If anyone touches her, I will personally see to it that you spend the rest of your life in federal prison."
Claire looked at Grant, her voice like steel. "I didn't come to destroy Sterling Hospitality, Grant. I came to strip you of it. This drive contains complete proof of your tax fraud, your illegal wiretaps, and the illegal coercion you used against former employees—including the written threats your security team slipped under my door nine years ago."
Grant clutched his chest, breathing heavily, his arrogance finally cracking under the weight of exposure.

"You... you can't..." Grant gasped.
"I can," Claire replied calmly. "And I already have. Copies of these files were delivered to the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Department of Justice one hour ago."
