Chapter 3 - The Ghost of Michael Hayes

The morning sun broke over Manhattan, reflecting off the damp glass of the penthouse windows. I stood in the luxurious kitchen, holding a warm cup of coffee while watching Lily play happily with a set of wooden blocks on the rug. To her, this was a fun vacation in a high-rise castle. She was too young to understand that her world had been ripped apart.

Julian walked into the room wearing a crisp charcoal suit, carrying a thick binder of legal documents and a secure laptop.

“Our first move is defensive,” Julian stated, placing the binder on the marble island. “Lucian—operating as Michael—filed an emergency ex-parte motion with the family court yesterday afternoon immediately after kicking you out.”

My heart skipped a beat. “A motion for what?”

“Full termination of your parental rights and a complete gag order,” Julian replied grimly. “He claims you are an unfit, mentally unstable mother who abandoned your child in a storm after being exposed for infidelity. He hired process servers to deliver the notice to your old address, knowing you weren't there, so he could win a default judgment in forty-eight hours.”

A wave of pure fury surged through my veins. “He threw us out in the rain! He tossed twenty-dollar bills at my feet!”

“And we have the security footage to prove it,” Julian said, opening his laptop to display a clear, high-definition video feed. “The Manhattan municipal traffic camera directly opposite your brownstone captured the entire incident. It clearly shows Lucian physically shoving you onto the sidewalk, throwing money into the mud, and locking the door while you were holding a toddler in a gale-force storm.”

I stared at the video screen. Seeing my own degradation played back in high definition made my blood boil, but it also crystallized my resolve.

“He thought I had nowhere to go,” I said coldly. “He thought I would end up in a public shelter or on a train back to my small hometown, broken and helpless.”

“That was his fatal mistake,” Julian agreed. “He assumed you were isolated. He doesn't know you are under my protection. We are going to flip his emergency court hearing tomorrow morning into a public execution of his legal strategy.”

Julian opened the binder, revealing a document signed by one of the top family law attorneys in the state of New York—Victoria Sterling, a woman known in high-society legal circles as 'The Anaconda.'

“Victoria has already filed a counter-petition,” Julian explained. “We are requesting an immediate emergency hearing for full temporary custody, an injunction freezing all marital assets held under the name 'Michael Hayes,' and a court-ordered, independent DNA test conducted by a court-appointed forensic geneticist at Bellevue Hospital.”

“Will Lucian agree to a second DNA test?” I asked anxiously. “If he used Gabriel’s blood last time, won't he just try to swap the samples again?”

Julian offered a faint, dangerous smile. “Last time, Lucian controlled the laboratory. This time, Victoria has secured an order where the biological sample will be drawn inside the courtroom, in front of the judge, by a state-appointed officer. Lucian will have to provide his actual blood right there on the record. When his DNA matches Lily with 99.9% certainty, his entire narrative of infidelity collapses instantly.”

“And what happens when the court realizes he lied about the first test?”

“Then the judge opens a criminal investigation for perjury, falsification of evidence, and child endangerment,” Julian said smoothly. “Lucian built his trap out of paper. We are about to set it on fire.”

Suddenly, the encrypted phone on Julian’s counter buzzed. He picked it up, swiping the screen to answer. He listened silently for thirty seconds, his expression growing colder with every passing second.

“I understand. Keep him under surveillance,” Julian said before hanging up.

He looked at me. “Lucian just listed your brownstone on the private real estate market for four million dollars. He has also scheduled an auction for tomorrow afternoon to liquidate all your personal property—your father’s antique furniture, your art collection, your mother’s heirlooms, and your interior design portfolio.”

My knuckles turned white against the edge of the counter. “He’s trying to erase every trace of my existence before the court date.”

“Then let’s go give your husband a surprise visit,” Julian said, pulling a set of keys from his pocket. “It’s time Michael Hayes realized his wife didn't vanish into the rain.”
