Chapter 4 - The Auction of Betrayal

At 2:00 PM that afternoon, the historic brownstone in the West Village was bustling with activity. Private art dealers, estate buyers, and high-society appraisers moved through the halls I had meticulously decorated over three years. Gold tags hung from my mother’s vintage velvet armchairs; inventory stickers were slapped onto my father’s hand-carved mahogany desk.
Standing near the marble fireplace in the main parlor was Lucian—dressed impeccably in a bespoke navy suit, sipping champagne, and chatting casually with a high-end estate auctioneer. He looked completely unbothered, exuding the effortless charm of a wealthy bachelor clearing out old clutter.
“Yes, make sure the bedroom sets are cleared by Friday,” Lucian was saying smoothly to the auctioneer. “My ex-wife had rather… pedestrian taste. I want the entire place gutted before the new buyers inspect it.”
“I’m so sorry you had to go through such a messy split, Mr. Hayes,” the auctioneer commiserated smoothly. “Infidelity is such a tragedy.”
“One copes,” Lucian replied with a tragic sigh, shaking his head. “I just want to close this chapter and move on with my—”
The heavy oak front doors swung open with a loud, echoing bang.
The chatter in the parlor died down instantly. Every buyer, appraiser, and assistant turned to look toward the foyer.
I walked in first. I was no longer the drenched, sobbing woman in a ruined coat. I wore a tailored ivory power suit, my hair styled impeccably, my head held high. Behind me walked Julian Vance, flanked by two towering private security guards and Victoria Sterling, who carried a thick leather briefcase.
Lucian’s champagne glass paused halfway to his lips. For a fraction of a second, raw, unadulterated shock flashed across his face. His eyes widened as he saw me—and then his gaze shifted to Julian. The color drained from his cheeks.
“Maya?” Lucian stammered, quickly recovering his composure and stepping forward with a practiced scowl. “What is the meaning of this? You are trespassing on private property. I have a court order—”
“You have nothing, Lucian,” I interrupted, my voice cutting through the silent room like a razor.
The room collective gasped at the name. Lucian’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits.
“My name is Michael,” he said sharply, turning to the security guards. “Officers, escort these people off my premises immediately!”
Victoria Sterling stepped forward, pulling a stamped document from her briefcase and holding it directly in front of Lucian’s face.
“I am Victoria Sterling, legal counsel for Mrs. Maya Hayes,” Victoria announced in a loud, commanding tone that echoed through the entire house. “This property is currently under an emergency freeze order issued by the New York Supreme Court, County of New York. All liquidation activities, estate sales, and property transfers associated with the name 'Michael Hayes' are halted immediately under penalty of felony contempt.”
The auctioneer’s jaw dropped. He quickly backed away from Lucian. “Mr. Hayes, what is this?”
“It’s a desperate stunt by an unfaithful ex-wife,” Lucian spat, glaring at me with pure hatred. “She was kicked out yesterday after a DNA test proved my daughter wasn't mine! She has no legal standing here!”
I took three slow, deliberate steps toward him until I was standing less than two feet away. I could smell his expensive cologne—the same scent I had smelled every morning for three years. The realization that I had laid next to this monster made my skin crawl, but I didn't flinch.
“You threw me into a storm, Lucian,” I said quietly, keeping my voice cold and steady so everyone in the room could hear. “You threw twenty dollars into the mud and slammed the door on your two-year-old daughter. You thought I was weak. You thought I was helpless.”
I leaned in closer, my eyes locking onto his.
“I know about the Vance estate,” I whispered. “I know about Gabriel. I know about the locket. And I know you swapped the DNA sample.”
Lucian’s jaw tightened so hard a muscle twitched violently in his cheek. The arrogant mask he wore began to fracture, revealing the cold, mercenary operative underneath.
“You’re playing a game you won't survive, Maya,” Lucian hissed under his breath, so low only I could hear. “Julian is using you. The moment he gets what he wants, he’ll discard you just like I did.”
“Julian didn't leave my daughter in the rain,” I shot back softly.
Julian stepped up beside me, placing a supportive hand on my shoulder. He looked down at his twin brother with absolute contempt.
“The court date is set for 9:00 AM tomorrow, Lucian,” Julian said calmly. “The judge has ordered a mandatory appearance. Bring your blood. Because tomorrow, the whole world finds out who you really are.”
Victoria handed legal summonses to Lucian’s assistants while Julian’s security team began escorting the prospective buyers out of the house. Lucian stood alone in the center of the parlor he had tried to sell out from under me, holding the court order in his trembling hand.
As I turned my back on him and walked toward the door, Lucian called out, his voice sharp with desperation.
“Maya! You think you’re saving Lily? You have no idea what my family is capable of! If you show up to that court tomorrow, you won't make it to the afternoon!”
May you like
I stopped at the threshold, looking back over my shoulder with a faint, bitter smile.
“I’ve already survived the worst thing you could do to me, Michael,” I said. “See you in court.”
