Chapter 8 - Through the Ashes

The ascent through the smoke-filled stairwell of the tower was a nightmare of heat and darkness.
Silas led the way, his arm wrapped firmly around Ren’s waist, shielding her from the falling plaster and embers. The elevator shafts were useless, acting as giant chimneys drawing the smoke upward.
They reached the thirty-second floor. The air was thick and gray, visibility reduced to mere inches.
"This way!" Ren coughed, pointing her flashlight down a narrow corridor.
They reached the utility room. Ren’s fingers, though trembling, worked the digital keypad of the override system with surgical precision. She connected her phone to the terminal, her screen flashing with warning lights.
"It’s bypassed," she gasped, her eyes tearing up from the smoke. "I need... I need to reroute the primary valve manually. Silas, hold that lever!"
Silas grabbed the massive iron lever, his muscles straining as he forced it downward against the pressure of the escaping gas. The heat was immense, searing his palms through his leather gloves.
"Almost there," Ren muttered, her fingers flying over her phone. "Three... two... one... Done!"
A loud clunk echoed through the pipes as the gas supply was cut off. The immediate threat of a catastrophic explosion died down.
But before they could celebrate, a figure emerged from the smoke at the doorway.
Gerald Hatch stood there, his face blackened by soot, his eyes wide with a maniacal, desperate rage. He held a steel pipe in his hands.
"You ruined everything!" Gerald screamed, lunging at Ren.
Silas didn't hesitate. He stepped in front of Ren, catching the pipe with his bare, bandaged hand. The impact jarred his arm, but he didn't flinch. He twisted the pipe out of Gerald’s grip, threw him to the floor, and pinned him down with a heavy knee to his chest.
Silas raised his fist, his face a mask of pure fury. He wanted to kill him. He wanted to end the threat once and for all.
"Silas! No!" Ren’s voice pierced through the adrenaline. "You promised!"
Silas’s fist hovered inches from Gerald’s face. He looked at Gerald—a pathetic, broken man begging for mercy—and then he looked at Ren.
Silas slowly lowered his fist. He pulled a pair of heavy zip-ties from his pocket, securing Gerald’s hands behind his back.

"You're done, Gerald," Silas said quietly.
As they walked out of the burning building, carrying the captured traitor, the snow began to fall again, washing away the ash from their faces.
