Chapter 8 - The Yellow Chairs

By the time spring arrived, Graham’s life had been completely rearchitected.
He had stepped down as the active CEO of Whitaker Development, moving into the role of Chairman of the Board. He handed the day-to-day operations over to a brilliant young executive who valued work-life balance, much to Arthur Vance’s lingering annoyance.
Graham had sold his minimalist penthouse. He bought a sprawling, historic Victorian house in Newton, featuring a massive backyard with old oak trees, plenty of room for three toddlers to run, and a kitchen large enough for a family.
On a sunny Saturday afternoon, the backyard was a scene of beautiful chaos.
Maya, Chloe, and Liam were chasing a golden retriever puppy that Graham had bought them—a ridiculous, clumsy creature named "Barnaby."
Emily stood on the back porch, watching them with a glass of lemonade in her hand. Graham walked out of the house, carrying two old wooden chairs he had found at a flea market. He set them down on the grass, along with a can of bright yellow paint and two brushes.
Emily blinked, a smile spreading across her face. "What is this?"
"Everything serious needs one ridiculous thing nearby," Graham said, quoting the words she had spoken to him in her tiny apartment years ago. He picked up a brush and handed it to her. "I thought these chairs would look good near the oak tree."
Emily looked at the paint, then at Graham. The armor she had worn since the airport had completely dissolved, replaced by the warmth he had fell in love with.
"You remembered," she said softly.
"I remember everything, Emily," Graham said, stepping closer to her. "I remember the smell of your apartment. I remember the way you cried during old movies. And I remember the man I wanted to be when I was with you. I’m finally that man. Or at least, I’m trying very hard to be."
May you like
Emily set her lemonade down. She reached out, taking his hand, her fingers intertwining with his.
"You don't have to try so hard anymore, Graham," she whispered. "You're already here."
