CHAPTER 2 — THE FILE THAT SHOULD NOT EXIST

Ethan didn’t move when Michael said Jacob’s age.
He just stood there, rainwater still dripping from his coat onto the polished floor of the tower office.
“Say it,” Michael repeated, voice low. Dangerous in the way calm water is dangerous before a flood.
Ethan finally spoke.
“Three years and four months.”
The room went silent in a way that felt physical.
Michael stared at him.
“That’s impossible,” he said.
Ethan slid another photo across the desk.
Elena holding the boy tighter than before. His face turned away this time, as if someone had trained him not to be seen too clearly.
“There’s more,” Ethan said. “And you’re not going to like it.”
Michael opened the folder again.
Inside was a document stamped with something that should not have existed.
DEATH CERTIFICATE — ELENA HARPER REED
Status: DECEASED
Cause: Vehicle fire (I-55 incident)
But beneath it… a second page.
Amended report.
And a name that made Michael’s jaw tighten.
Detective Rowan Hale.
Michael had buried men for less.
“He signed off on it,” Ethan said quietly. “Fast-track closure. No full forensic rebuild. No DNA confirmation beyond partial remains.”
Michael’s voice turned flat. “And the ring?”
“Planted in the wreckage,” Ethan said. “Or… placed there after.”
Michael stood slowly.
The skyline outside the window looked suddenly wrong. Like a stage set pretending to be a city.
“You’re telling me my wife was declared dead without confirmation,” Michael said, “and my son was never recorded.”
Ethan hesitated.
“I’m telling you someone built her death carefully.”
Michael walked to the window.
Far below, Chicago moved like nothing had ever happened. Cars. Lights. People who had no idea they were walking inside a lie.
“Find Hale,” Michael said.
“I already did,” Ethan replied.
That made Michael turn.

Ethan placed a second file on the desk.
“This is where it gets worse.”
