CHAPTER 3 — THE MAN WHO ERASED HER

Detective Rowan Hale had not retired.

He had disappeared.

That was the official story.

The real story was inside Ethan’s file.

Michael read it once.

Then again.

Then he stopped reading and just stared.

Hale had left the police force six months after Elena’s “death.”

He had moved under a false identity.

And three weeks later, a shell company was formed under offshore ownership:

HARP & CO CHILD SERVICES

Michael’s fingers tightened around the paper.

“What is this?” he asked.

Ethan’s voice was careful. “We don’t know yet. But we know where it leads.”

The address was in Joliet.

The same city Elena had been seen buying milk.

Michael shut the file.

“Get the car.”

The boarding house was worse than the photographs suggested.

Old brick. Broken fence. A place that looked like it had forgotten what safety meant.

Michael stood across the street, rain falling again like it never stopped in this part of his life.

And then he saw her.

Elena.

Carrying laundry.

Real. Breathing. Exhausted.

She didn’t look up.

But Jacob did.

The boy was sitting on the steps, swinging his legs.

And when he laughed at something she said, Michael felt something inside him crack open so violently he thought it might kill him.

“That’s him,” Ethan whispered.

Michael didn’t answer.

He couldn’t.

Because Elena had just turned slightly—and for a split second, she looked directly at the street.

Directly at him.

And she didn’t react like a dead woman.

She reacted like someone who had already been running for three years.

She grabbed Jacob’s hand.

Hard.

Too fast.

Too practiced.

Then she pulled him inside.

And locked the door.

Michael stepped forward before Ethan could stop him.

“Michael—”

But Michael was already walking.

Toward the house.

May you like

Toward the truth.

Toward whatever had taken his wife and turned her into a ghost with a living child.
