Chapter 8 - The Price of Freedom

In the aftermath of the dockside showdown, the Moretti syndicate underwent a massive, swift purge. With Dominick’s treason fully documented, Nathaniel solidified his absolute authority over the family. He used his newly unquestioned power to execute his father's dream: dismantling the illegal operations and transitioning the Moretti empire entirely into legitimate, high-end corporate enterprises.

The Valenti family, realizing the Moretti family was now unified and stronger than ever under Nathaniel's iron leadership, signed a permanent peace treaty and withdrew from Providence entirely.

Despite the victory, a deep, painful rift began to grow between Nathaniel and Wren.

Two weeks after the incident at the docks, Wren was sitting on the balcony of the Newport estate, looking out over the ocean. Her mother’s health had completely stabilized; she was now recovering in a beautiful private home in the countryside, paid for by an anonymous trust Nathaniel had established.

Wren’s medical debt was gone. Her life was secure. Yet, her heart felt heavier than ever.

Hearing footsteps behind her, she turned to see Nathaniel standing in the doorway. He was dressed in a sharp navy suit, looking every bit the refined corporate titan he was becoming. But his eyes were heavy with sadness.

"Your mother sent a letter," Nathaniel said softly, placing a small envelope on the balcony table. "She says she loves the garden."

"Thank you, Nathaniel," Wren whispered. "For everything."

Nathaniel walked to the railing, staring out at the horizon. "I'm having my driver take you back to Providence tomorrow. A new apartment has been leased in your name near the waterfront. It's yours. Fully paid for."

Wren felt a sharp pang in her chest. "You're sending me away?"

Nathaniel turned to face her, his expression filled with profound regret. "That night at the docks... you almost died, Wren. You were exposed to a world of violence and blood because of me. I can never forgive myself for putting you in that danger."

"I chose to go to the docks, Nathaniel!" Wren said, standing up. "I went because I couldn't let them hurt you!"

"And that is exactly why you have to leave," Nathaniel said, his voice cracking slightly with emotion. "You are good, Wren. You are kind, pure, and honest. My world corrupts everything it touches. I love you too much to let it destroy you."

Wren froze. I love you too much. The words hung in the sea breeze, devastating and beautiful.

"If you loved me," Wren said, tears welling up in her eyes, "you wouldn't decide what's best for me. You would ask me what I want."

May you like

"I know what you deserve," Nathaniel replied softly. "And it isn't a man with blood on his past."

He turned and walked away, leaving her standing alone on the balcony as the sun dipped below the horizon.
