Chapter 10 - The Ring of Truth

One year later.

The sunset over Key West was an explosion of purple, gold, and deep orange, casting a magical light over the wooden deck of a private catamaran floating in the calm waters of the Florida Straits.

Skylar stood at the bow of the boat, her white silk dress catching the warm evening breeze. Her long hair was pinned back, exposing the faint white line along her jawline. Next to her stood Victoria Vance, raising a glass of champagne, surrounded by fifty of Skylar’s closest childhood friends, coworkers, and the local survivors her logistics firm had helped liberate over the past year.

Leo Miller stepped out from the cabin, wearing a sharp linen suit. He walked up to Skylar, his face illuminated by the golden hour light. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box.

The crowd became completely silent, the only sound the gentle lapping of the ocean against the catamaran’s hull.

Leo opened the box, revealing a stunning, ethical emerald ring, surrounded by a delicate band of recycled platinum. It was completely different from the traditional diamond ring Derek had used to bind her to his family’s greed. This ring looked like the ocean—vast, deep, and untameable.

"Skylar," Leo said, his voice deep and steady, filled with an emotion that shook him to his core. "You survived the fire, and you turned your survival into a lighthouse for thousands of other people. I don't want to protect you from the world, because I know you don't need protecting. I want to build a life beside you, as an equal, as your partner, and as your biggest admirer. Will you marry me?"

Skylar looked down at the emerald ring, then up at Leo’s kind, honest eyes. She remembered the paper she had left behind beside her old wedding ring—the document that had started the fire that destroyed her oppressors. And she looked at this new ring, which represented a future of absolute equality and choosing her own destiny.

"Yes, Leo," Skylar whispered, a radiant, unshakeable smile spreading across her face. "A thousand times, yes."

As Leo slid the ring onto her finger, the crowd erupted into a joyous cheer, their glasses clinking against the sunset sky. The old broken cup on the kitchen floor was gone, the Foster family name was a footnote in a legal ledger, and Skylar Bennett was finally sailing into her own beautiful, unwritten future.
