Chapter 7 - The Trial of Fire

The courtroom was packed with local journalists, attracted by the high-profile nature of the Vance law firm and the scandalous collapse of the prominent Foster Boat Brokerage. Judge Evelyn Martinez, a severe woman with a reputation for absolute intolerance toward domestic abuse, sat high on her elevated mahogany bench.
Victoria Vance stood at the podium, her navy Chanel suit looking like armor. "Your Honor, we are here today to petition for a final, permanent injunction, total asset liquidation of the hidden marital estate, and immediate referral of the defendant, Derek Foster, to the State Attorney’s Office for criminal prosecution."
Derek’s lawyer stood up, his voice trembling slightly. "Your Honor, my client admits to a volatile marital dispute, but the asset garnishment requested by the plaintiff is unprecedented. The Cayman Islands account was created prior to—"
"The Cayman Islands account was funded using stolen logistics bonuses and hidden corporate distributions from marital assets, Your Honor," Victoria Vance interrupted, her voice booming through the sound system. "We have the forensic digital tracking logs compiled by our investigator, Leo Miller. We have the exact timestamps showing the defendant logging into the shell account from the plaintiff’s private residence while she was working overtime shifts to pay his car notes."
Victoria stepped toward the evidence table and picked up a large, high-resolution digital printout. It was the photograph of Skylar’s second-degree burns taken at Memorial General Hospital.
"But more importantly," Victoria said, her voice dropping to a lethal whisper that gripped the entire room, "we have the physical manifestation of the defendant’s financial management strategy. This is Skylar Bennett’s face six days ago. Burned, blistered, and scarred because she refused to allow her husband’s sister to drain her personal savings account."
A collective gasp echoed through the gallery. Judge Martinez leaned forward, her eyes narrowing into slits as she studied the graphic photograph of the burn. She looked down at Derek, her expression filled with profound disgust.
"Mr. Foster," Judge Martinez said, her voice cold enough to freeze water. "Do you have an explanation for this medical record?"
Derek stood up, his smooth mask completely cracking. "Your Honor, she... she was yelling at me. She wasn't respecting my family. It was a mutual argument—"
"A mutual argument?!" Judge Martinez slammed her gavel down with a sound like a gunshot. "An unarmed woman sitting at a breakfast table is not a mutual combatant, Mr. Foster! Sit your asset down before I have the bailiffs hold you in contempt immediately!"
She turned her gaze back to Victoria Vance. "The court has reviewed the audio recording submitted into evidence. The language used by the defendant is not just abusive; it is a clear declaration of financial coercion and physical terrorism. The court hereby grants the permanent injunction for protection. Derek Foster is banned from any contact with Skylar Bennett for the rest of his natural life."
The judge began signing a thick stack of orders with a heavy black pen. "Furthermore, the court finds the defendant guilty of systematic marital waste and fraudulent asset concealment. The Biscayne Bay apartment is awarded solely and exclusively to Skylar Bennett, free and clear of any marital claims. The Cayman Islands account containing four hundred and eighty thousand dollars is hereby ordered liquidated and transferred in its entirety to the plaintiff as compensatory and punitive damages."
"No!" Suzanne screamed from the back row, jumping to her feet. "What about my boutique?! What about my store?!"
"Silence in the court!" the bailiff shouted, stepping toward her.
Judge Martinez looked at Suzanne with absolute disdain. "As for Suzanne’s Luxe Style, the court finds that the corporate entity was used as a fraudulent front for asset concealment. The state receivership is ordered to seize all remaining commercial inventory to satisfy the legal fees of the plaintiff. This court is adjourned."
As the gavel struck the bench for the final time, two state troopers stepped behind Derek’s chair.

"Derek Foster? Turn around and place your hands behind your back," the trooper commanded. "You are under arrest for felony domestic battery and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon."
As the metal handcuffs clicked shut around Derek’s wrists in front of the flashing cameras of the media, Skylar stood up. She did not look back at him as he was led away through the secure side door. She looked toward the large glass windows of the courtroom, where the Miami sun was shining brightly over the open ocean. She was finally free.
